    apache virtual hosts

Ok, I'm thinking about adding some more domains to my vps, but I would like it so that people can't connect these other domains with the current ones I have. If I just use name-base virtual hosts, then someone could use something like domaintools.com and find out all the hosts on the vps. So I was thinking I could combine both ip-based and name-based virtual hosts, and put one group of domains on one ip and the other group on a different ip. Except, I thought i recalled reading that ip-based won't work on vps. However, I did a little testing and it does seem to work, so my first question is, does ip-based virtual hosts actually work on a vps. Second, will this do what I want and make it impossible to find a connection between the two groups of domains, other than the fact that the ip's would both belong to GNAX?

    Hi wuurp,

Regarding your first question: yes that is possible, it's just like on a regular server.

Secondly, there are ways to lead to relate the IPs with eachother. For instance on both IP addresses the hostname will be the same. So if you connect to the mailserver of IP 1, it'll show the same hostname as on IP 2. However, the chances of someone finding about about that are quite small.

    Thanks Andre.

More on the second question. Could not each IP have a different domain through reverse dns? And though I haven't tried it, I understand I can run a second mailserver instance on the second IP to further separate the two groups. Or were you saying something different?

A third question. If I upgrade my account, it would come with additional IPs. Would my IPs be changed so i have a block all in sequence, or could the new ones be different?

Yes every IP can have its own reverse DNS. It's also possible to run a second mailserver on the second IP, but the question is whether you can also make that work with your control panel. I wouldn't worry too much about the mailserver though, chances that someone finds out about that are very small.

As for the additional IPs: if you prefer we can allocate IPs from a different range, that won't be a problem.

    Thanks again.

No worries about the control panel, I don't use one

Now I just have to think about whether this is something I really want to do.

Alternatively you could get another Starter VPS for this and seperate them that way - that way things are really completely seperated. It costs a bit more that way though.

If you need any help you can always get in touch with our support department (or ask here).

Certainly something to consider, it would be easier management.

I got a pretty good deal on my vps. Maybe I should have gotten a second when I had the chance.

I'm not sure what the deal was, but you can always ask sales whether they can make an exception if you were to get a second VPS. I can't guarantee whether or not they'll be able to do it (mainly depends on what the deal was), but it's worth a shot
