    Semi Dedicated vs. VPS ?

Could someone help me out with what the differences basically are from getting a Semi Dedicated vs. a VPS solution.

    1. Can Cpanel WHM be installed on both?
    2. Which would typically have higher performance for serving the web pages?
    3. What is managed by JaguarPC on semi-dedicated that would not be on VPS?
    4. What could you do/install on a VPS machine that you could not do on Semi-Dedicated?

    Much appreciated, Al

    1. Yes and buying one of the control panels is required to have your VPS managed, IIRC. (I.e. without a panel, you need to do your own updates and such.)
    2. SDX, at least for the money -- the high end VPSses might surpas it
    3. SDX is fully managed, just like a shared server. So all the updates, monitoring and everything is done. However, you can't install your own (background) applications.
    4. Pretty much everything that's not already present on SDX. VPS gives you full control; that's the point of it. VoIP, gameservers, you name it.

N.B. I'm a client hanging around these forums. I have neither a VPS nor an SDX (just a standard shared account). Then again, if I do not know an answer, I usually keep my mouth shut rather than fill the blanks with fantasy .

I agree with the above and add in the following.

If you dont need custom configuration or custom software, DO NOT GET a VPS. SDX will run circles around a VPS, the Upgrade path from an SDX account is strait to a Dedicated Account.

For most web sites it should go

    Shared -> SDX -> Dedicated

    Thanks for the response.

Will the semi-dedicated do everything that my reseller account can do? Will I be able to setup my own nameservers under my domain? Any other possible advantages of a reseller account over the semi-dedicated ?

Semi-Dedicated does not come with WHM access, so it is not a reseller account. If you are looking to resell space, your upgrade path is Reseller -> VPS -> Dedicated.

I am not a reseller, but I do have developers work on my system whom I do not want access to all web sites I may have. I take it the Semi-Dedicated solution will not work for me then?

What access rights do you need for the developers?

Developers basically need full capability in their own space. So that basically I have a few developers who create a mySQL, PHP application in their own test environment and then I manage the release to the production area, which has all my domains and applications. The reseller account works for me but the performance seems very slugish so the semi-dedicated looks like a nice upgrade but then I would loose the capability to create these isolated areas, not to mention my own nameservers, etc.

Plus I am not really smart enough to go to a self managed solution such as a dedicated server, or possibly VPS. The perfect solution doesn't seem to exist for me

Your not alone, Search the forums for "SDX-PRO"

Maybe you can add to the push to have this package created

SDX-Pro will not have reseller capabilities. But something on that line of reseller package.

VPS Enterprise would be good for you now. If that is not affordable, then sdx pro (sdx reseller) won't be cheaper.

As per agreement, I am not going to repeat what I am/was interested in ...
    *cough* "SDX Reseller" *cough*

But your last post confuses me, Masood.

Is the hypothetical SDX-Pro the same thing as the hypothetical SDX-Reseller?

Anyway, haven't heard anything about it lately.
    Good luck

my whole understanding of was the SDXpro would have WHM access but limited on the number of domains. With out that, there is little point in having it at all.

I will not express my views on VPS's, they are well known

My understanding is that SDX-Pro would be a bigger sdx plan (less sdx accounts/server) that bridges the gap between sdx and dedicated. Same with reseller. I'm not sure when it becomes reality. Or may be it can be just one plan with WHM access.
