    Multiple brief outages on Hammerhead

I am on an SDX on Hammerhead. I use it mostly for personal stuff (bookmarks, personal wiki, sharing photos with friends), I use about a gig of bandwidth a month (but have the SDX for the 47gigs (have a ton of photos).

The problem is that it goes out practically two times a day for 1 min - 20 min (only recorded the last month, before that there were longer outages though). I have used Pingdom to check this for the past month, and I have also gone to the dashboard and seen Hammerhead as down. Now, is this normal for shared hosting? I never had it occur when I was on the gigadeal for years. I understand servers go down, especially on shared hosting, but I'm used to it going out for say, 2 hours once or twice a month. Not 1min - 20 mins randomly throughout the day.

Nope. Get a ticket in so they can have a look at it. Preferably update it when you notice the site is down at that moment.

Is ALL of that downtime truly 'for real', or might the monitoring service be a bit too strict in what it considers downtime and / or have issues of its own? Not to talk down that you're server is having issues that deserve to be looked into, but I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out how an SDX machine gets to be down twice a day for 10 minutes average for over a month already. I'd have thought lots of folks to have raised a red flag by then..

I didn't start using the monitoring service until after I had noticed it for a while. I also used Host Tracker which produced the same results.

Yeah thats the thing, I would think others on the same server would experience the same problems.

The average of 1-20mins may be 10 minutes, but it does not go down for 20 minutes near as often as 1 minute. I would say the most common is 4 minutes.

Also, like I said, when I see that it is down, I have also checked the JaguarPC status of the server which shows it as down. So I have no idea why others on the server have not noticed.

    On to submit a ticket...

I am on an SDX on Kraken.

Also, I've been using Host Tracker for over a year (1-minute pings).

If you'll look at my sig, you see a running uptime average over the last 1+ years. This is a live (Host Tracker) stat, generated every time my sig appears on a post @ JagPC. The only reason it isn't 100% is because Tech Support suspended my account for 3 days because my web site was using up too many resources (for a GigaDeal account) and crashing Platinum on a regular basis.

    Three thoughts:
    1. No, downtime is NOT normal for shared hosting here, especially SDX. Kraken has been uber reliable!
    2. Most likely, one of your neighbors on Hammerhead has outgrown SDX and is crashing the machine, and...
    3. Tech Support needs to step in, monitor the situation, and suspend the offending web site[s] account until they can make arrangements to be moved a Dedicated plan.

Anyway, you've done the right thing by running Host Tracker and submitting a ticket to Tech Support. The rest is up to JagPC.

BTW, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, soooo...
