    Arrow Semi-Dedicated Server (need help)

    Hello,
I am new here. I am actually a customer from another hosting company. I am currently using their highest shared hosting plan: http://www.one-stop-hosting.com/?lan...ing&submenu=44

This is not suitable for me anymore. I have a community site that was custom built (poorly) and now that it is getting busier, I am continuously reaching their 5% CPU limit. I am looking for a semi-dedicated plan but am worried about running into similar problems. If you can help with my questions, it would be really appreciated:

1- Can anyone tell me what the CPU limit is and how this is calculated?
2- Is there a file count limit (like a limit of how many actual files can be stored on the server)? If so, what is the limit and does it count emails?
3- What control panel is used and is there a demo of this?
    4- Is there shell access?

In terms of going over your limit (whether it be bandwidth, CPU, files etc...) does JPC send out emails with warnings first or is the site automatically suspended?

I think that's it for now. I'm too tired to think of anything else
Thanks in advance for your help

    1. I dunno... It's probably on a case-by-case basis, but that's just a *guess*.

    2. I don't think so. I usually have a half-million files on my SDX account, at any given time.

    3. cPanel - http://www.jaguarpc.com/shared-hosting/demo/

    4. Yes. All you have to do is ask Tech Support to enable it - only takes a few minutes.

    5. Generally speaking, JagPC will send you warnings. If you ignore the warnings and/or don't correct the situation, they WILL suspend your site until you upgrade/escalate your level of service.

I suppose it depends on the situation. If your site is bringing down the entire server, I imagine they would suspend you immediately, then send you a warning, but you will get a warning, one way or the other.

This is for everyone's benefit & protection. For instance, you wouldn't want a 'neighbor' using up all the resources on the server and/or bringing down your site[s], right?

One of the great things about this place is... you won't have to go elsewhere, no matter what.

They offer solutions for everything from a simple 'web presence' web site to fully managed dedicated servers. Linux - Windows - you name it!

And, SDX is a powerhouse. I highly doubt you'll outgrow it...

There's a big difference between where you're considering moving from and to:

One-Stop are actually just a front-end reseller for Reseller Panel/LiquidNet - Anyone can sign up as a reseller, use RP's web templates (which is how I recognised it) and set your own plans and prices - That's exactly what One-Stop are doing. Fine for customers who only want a fairly normal web capability but as soon as you start hitting limits you're snookered with no-where to go. Moving up their packages just gives you more space and bandwidth - Not more processor or RAM, and they're hosting on mid to low-range machines with low RAM capability etc.

By moving to JaguarPC you're moving to an actual hosting supplier - not some middle-man. So, whatever plan you choose to start on, you're in direct contact with your supplier, and they can advise you on any limits you're hitting. Better still, you can also upgrade from shared-hosting to SDX to VPS to dedicated server if you need to.

I'd say make the change - Then you'll see the difference between dealing through third-parties and dealing direct with a truly respected big-time hosting supplier.

And no, I don't work for Jag LOL

Another possible difference is that the SDX machines here are Beasts with tons of horsepower.

However, no matter where you are hosted you need to spend some time and ensure that your application is tuned with the basics -- ensure that your SQL queries are hitting indexes and are not performing large table scans, for instance. No matter how much hardware you throw at an application, even small query problems with medium sized sites can bring a server to its knees.
    Good luck

Thanks for all your help everyone!!

Ron, you make a great point - problem is I am a designer not a programmer The original programmer is not reachable anymore and everyone else seems to be scared to touch my site. I'm sure the fault falls upon the build/coding of my site and not the hosting but it's easier to find a more powerful host then it is to find someone willing to fix my site.

Anyhow, I checkout out resellers panel and noticed they had semi-dedicated servers too. I noticed their CPU is 15% and they say there is only 6 other people on the account.

I contacted JPC sales department yesterday and they told me that there isn't really a set maximum and as long as my site doesn't interrupt other accounts, it's fine. They also said that there is 20 other people on the box.

Do you think it's better that there is only 6 people on the account as opposed to the 20 that JPC has?? What about the difference in servers? I don't know much about them so I was wondering if JPC has more powerful servers then resellers panel is using in their semi-dedicated plan? Sorry for all the questions... I just really want to find a permanent home for my site

What if those 6 ppl at the other place have 100 domains each? Or, the 20 ppl at JagPC have 1000?

I know you're probably a little timid after your last experience, but JagPC isn't gonna shaft you! That's NOT what this place is all about...

    Really! JagPC is unique!

You can do all the second-guessing you want, but it won't make any difference. This is THE place!

If there was a better host out there, I wouldn't be 'talking' to you right now... I'd be over on their forums!

Number of users really tells you nothing in a hosting environment--there are so many variables that come into play. Like Vin said, those six people at the other place could be hosting 100 sites each for all you know and even then, what does that mean? If each of those 100 sites only gets 5 hits a day then there will be nothing to worry about. Conversely, each of those 6 users could host one site that gets tens of thousands of hits a day.

Like Ron said, the JPC servers are beasts. They've each got two dual core processors (essentially giving you four processors), I believe at least 8Gb of RAM, RAID storage (so that data is mirrored--if a hard drive fails a secondary one has the exact same data, so the site doesn't go down). When it comes to their servers JPC does not cut corners. Other hosts try to pack as many people as they can onto a box, JPC makes sure they deliver what they promise and will actually undersell a server if that's what it takes to make sure that happens.

If you host here this will be a permanent home for your site. I have very high expectations for my hosting and I've been here for over six years.

The past couple of months, I was getting over 100k hits a day, and SDX wasn't even breathing hard!!!

It's simmered down now, to normal levels, but SDX is awesome!!!

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

No need to cross your fingers. You will be VERY HAPPY with your new Hosting solution here at JaguarPC - hey, even the name of the place is great!

With Paypal sometimes there is a hitch in the ordering process if everything does not match up right.

Just email sales@jaguarpc.com in the AM if you are not setup by then.

Anyway, hang in there! Getting setup @ JagPC is the hardest thing you'll ever do here... then, it's all fun & games!
