    Adrastea Server

I hope this is the best place to put this.

My host already sent out a support ticket for this, but I wanted to bring attention to this issue ASAP because it seems to be getting worse. Her hosting is on the Adrastea server and the server keeps going down. Either part of it will go down and we'll lose our databases, or the whole thing goes out. It started happening a bit earlier this month, but lately, the server has been having issues a couple times a day. Albeit it doesn't last long, it's creating problems for us and is making us consider alternatives. I'd rather not do that though, since the JaguarPC servers have usually been reliable, and it seems like the Adrastea server is the only having having these problems at the moment.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I just want to make sure that the issue is already known of and possibly being worked on.

Here's a couple times I caught the server acting up, thought there's been a lot more than that. If I catch anymore, I'll add them.

I can only edit once? Anyway, our ticket was answered, so hopefully this has been taken care of now. Sorry for the trouble.

Eh, we're still having problems. Sometimes our sites will load really slow. And it just went down again a little bit ago for a few minutes. Not long enough for the Network Status to pick up in its refreshing, but it gave this error: Connection Reset

And thanks for the welcome, Ron!

Ah, my host got a screen shot from earlier tonight too when it was down for about 8 minutes. That is: here.

    Jammer Lea,

Please take it up in your support ticket, I see from emails an abusive user on Adrastea was contacted on sunday night, that could have been related to the problem you were seeing.

It probably was related to that problem, or is related. I saw the server go down again today, so we did send another report ticket. We were given the offer to have them monitor the problem account and let us know what's up, or to move us to a different JaguarPC server.

My concerns are more along the line of how long is it going to take for the issue to be fixed? Shouldn't the problem account already be being monitored? I want to see more steps taken to fix the issue, or a time set of when it should be expected to be fixed. None of this back-and-forth placating tickets of just monitoring the issue or moving us just so we can be happy. What about other people on the Adrastea server? And what happens if the same problem occurs on whatever other server we're moved to? Will we just get bounced around again?

I know JaguarPC has the ability to deal with this thing, but the tickets don't make it sound like anything has been done aside from, "we contacted the problem user". I know I sound really impatient, but this is service that we're paying for, so we have certain expectations. I don't know how long it takes to deal with the issue, but we want the problem to stop, and we want a clear answer. We do not want to get moved around.

    Hi Jammer Lea,

We are sorry you are having these problems with the webserver.
We are not talking about a single problem account or abusive user here. There are already two users contacted for this, one yesterday and one last week and rest assured they do not need any monitoring as they are already disabled and taken care of. For a problem which happens once every few days, it will take a bit of time to monitor the server and find out who else could be adding a new script capable of taking the webserver down. We are doing all we can and monitoring the server continuously and yes, monitoring the server continuously is the only way to find such issues and put a stop to them. Clients who do not have the patience to wait for the issue to be fixed are offered to be moved to another server. If you do not want to be moved, just update your support ticket.

    Jammer Lea,

I know this instability is frustrating, but as a long time client of JPC let me tell you that you can rest assured that this will only be a temporary problem. When you sign up with JPC you get an account created on a brand new server. JPC does their best to filter out the riffraff before they get to the servers, but sometimes a questionable account gets set up anyway--and sometimes a perfectly legit but naive user does something he shouldn't. Then there is the chance of several new clients all trying to upload and tweak their sites at once and the possibility of problems with faulty hardware that hasn't been tried in fire yet. In short, there are lots of reasons why a new server can have problems.

Once the server is filled up things usually change pretty quickly. No new users are added so the chance of bad neighbors ruining the neighborhood goes away and once existing users get settled in and make fewer changes to their sites the chance of problems from massive concurrent uploading or "experimental" software drops greatly. Established servers here have great track records--the server I was on until recently (when I was moved to a newer server as part of a routine upgrade) had uptime of over a year and no real problems to speak of. Even the new server (which didn't get any new clients added to it to my knowledge) has had a great track record--host tracker has been reporting 100% uptime since the move. Generally the only problems that established servers seem to have are due to either hardware failure (can't avoid that) or the very occasional DOS attack against a site on the server.

Hang in there--it will get better.
