You lost all of my databases?

How is it possible that in 4 years of service there is not one backup of my databases available?

Nevermind the absurdity of a business not calling or mailing a client when their credit card fails (I changed addresses! I'm sorry!) and you are ready to remove service.

Nevermind the absurdity of removing service without warning.

Nevermind the absurdity of a 1-800 sales number going right to the most uneager-to-business-with-you voice mail I've heard. Or of "0" going right to Greg's voice.

I have been very patient waiting to hear back from someone, but for the most part, sales and techs have been plenty happy to just let me leave as a client and not worry about this.

But in those databases were all the blog journal entries about my two children! Blogs from my sister in Samoa. Data for games I wrote enabling my family to login and guess the gender/birthdate of our babies and friends' babies before they were born. Data for apps I developed for clients.

I have not yet told my wife that all of the things we wrote about our children may be lost.

But as hard as that is to stomach, I cannot grasp how a hosting company cannot find one copy of my databases anywhere, with four years of service and with one migration/upgrade.

I cannot get in touch with anyone, and have not heard from your techs for 9 days.

Please update my ticket and give me a phone number to call.

We do not keep backups indefinitely and stack them. We would need a data farm of hundreds of datacenters like google to do that. We have backups better than most hosts, but can only store a couple recent and one archive for each site. Going that far is 3x more than most other hosts already. Sorry we can not store more.

You can of course opt for some extra backup service that you control and can store whatever you like as long as you like.

As for the service and other issues, im not sure what the problem is but please contact a couple of us managers in my sig with your ticket so we can catch up to your post.

I'm sorry this happened. We do email clients when payment fails, multiple times. First a week or so before the payment would be due, then again if payment fails and repeatedly after that until it's paid.

I took a look at your tickets and see our techs and sales reps have replied. Are you not receiving our emails or seeing the replies in your client area?

I don't see anything about your children, perhaps it was on a different domain.

Try using Google.com with the search format of site:domain.com and see if you can salvage your writings.
    Good luck

I had a blog set up at family.wetzell.com using Wordpress. (did I mention you lost all my subdomains and domain redirects too?). It was password protected so it didn't get indexed.

Fantastico just happened to dump a Jan. 2007 backup of that blog in my folder, but all of 2007 is lost, and other writings I put in a custom blog app I wrote earlier are gone.

My email was set to my brett@wetzell.com address, so if the service is ended, I'm not going to get notified I suppose, which I can fix.

What is very frustrating and shocking is that a snapshot of my account wasn't captured or retained for even a week after my account went offline. And I understand that you would not do regular incremental backups and keep them all on file, but I'd expect at least one copy of my databases from the last 6 years to be lingering somewhere.

While we certainly understand your frustration, JaguarPC did not lose any of your data. It was terminated as a result of a failed payment on the account. The billing notifications would have gone to that address before the bill was due, and for the few months after it was due as well.

you just learn 3 very important lessons

1> as a "webmaster" you have to have a email address that is accesible even if you lose your account, I use Gmail for this account, all of my jpc data goes to this account, so I can access it if something where to happen to my JPC Account

2> Always follow up with your service providers, it is not JPC job to track you down for payment, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure your bills are paid, no one else's

3> Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup
only you are responsible for your data, and only you are to blame if it is lost, for important data I have no less than 3 backups. 1 on the web server, 1 on my Home NAS, and 1 on a Flash Jump drive... Database backups are generated by a sql dump at midnight (instructions on setting this up are available on this forums)

Personal Responsibility, is not a bumper Sticker it is a Way of life...

He's good at that. I was wondering how long it would take for him to jump in here.

    Brett,

I lost two years worth of work when I first started out with computers. It left me in tears! I have become paranoid about backups now and STILL I lose material. I hope some how some way you can recover your material.

    Best of luck.

I find this neither shocking nor something you can expect. However, it might make sense for JagPC from a business perspective to do something of the sort anyway. Clearly taking your site off-line was the only way to alert you to the non-payment issue. So, perhaps sites had best be suspended for a while first, before removal?

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure it is... I think they give you 5 days with no suspension, suspend you for additional 5 and then the account is removed,

I highly doubt it goes from active to the trash instantly/..
