    What plan is better?

    http://www.jaguarpc.com/semi-dedicated/

    or
    Details: 15gb space, 300gb transfer, 256mb ram ($33.97)

    Im currently paying $34 for a VPS, while i can have this semi-dedicated for 29.

    WHich is faster and has more ram/cpu avalible? I run a forum so i need all the ram and cpu i can get. If i can get more on the semi dedicated than why am i paying for a VPS that cost more?

    You pay more for a VPS because

    1> You get a fixed set of resources (SDX all resources are shared among all users)
    2> You can configure your box how ever you want, installing what ever you want, and optimizing your box for your specific needs. (SDX you get what JPC Give you).

    However with a VPS you are limited to the amount of resources you buy, and you must know what your doing in regards to server security and optimization or you will be far far far worse off.

    First thing you need to look it is why your forum need the CPU and RAM, and if there are way to cut back your needs.

    an SDX will give you alot more head room than a normal shared,

    the Upgrade paths I would recommend are

    shared -> SDX -> Dedicated

    OR

    VPS -> Dedicated

    I would like to add a general upgrade path

    For Control, the upgrade path is:

    Shared -> Reseller -> VPS -> Dedicated

    For Power, the upgrade path is:

    Shared -> VPS -> SDX -> Dedicated

    You have to choose the plan according to your requirement in terms of amount of CPU power and Control/access level you want.

    Why would you to a VPS then a SDX? that makes zero since

    the Upgrade path should be

    Shared -> SDX -> Dedicated...

    there is no reason to put someone on a VPS

    I only mentioned the power specifications as they are on our servers. Sometimes there are certain shared clients whose requirements need a control as well CPU upgrade like clients who need unlimited emails cannot upgrade from shared to SDX or a reseller but on a VPS which is why a VPS is also mentioned. This does not in any way mean that a VPS is the only upgrade option for a shared client. Yes, you are right, a natural upgrade for a shared client is always an SDX but there can be exceptions like one I mentioned which we commonly observe. It is always on the requirement of a specific client whether he needs only a power upgrade, a control upgrade or a combination of both.

    Thanks for the replies. On my old old host (Shared) i was emailed about my resource usage. As you know on a shared server its set pretty LOW unless you run a static site. IF you run a forum you will hit that resource limit with minor mods and actvity.

    Does a SDX have this same problem? I dont want to move to an SDX and have these resource problems once again and be suspended. That is the only thing i love about the VPS. When its running slow its me making it run slow and i can fix that problem by disabling a few things on my forum. I've been with JAGUAR for awhile now without any emails or problems and dont want any by moving to an SDX with my forum.

    i dont need control. I just need power. I have an VPS, but its pretty much STOCK with e accelerator and thats it.

    JPC doesn't limit resources, per se. Of course, if your site is using a disproportionate number of CPU cycles or RAM for a long period of time they'll take action, but they don't have limits that say, for instance, that you only get X CPU cycles per hour. It sounds like that is the issue you've had with the old host.

    The difference between SDX and JPC shared is the number of accounts on the server. With fewer hands in the pie you can get a bigger slice. The advantage of SDX over VPS is that all of the system software (Apache, MySQL, etc.) is shared by everyone on the server. On VPS each account has its own set of these. If both servers have the same number of clients and similar resources available, the overhead consumed by SDX will be much lower, meaning more resources are available to scripts.

    Yes but there are things you can do to limit that for example

    1> Do you allow Guest Searching?
    2> If yes do you require CAPTCHA for guests?
    3> Do you have a Robots.txt
    4> Do to direct search engines or do you allow them to craw everything?
    5> Do you cache Search Results?
    6> Have you tested your mods to see if they could be optimized?

    I have focused on Searches because they are one of the biggest resource hogs on a forum.
