JaguarPC Uptime and Downtime - So far so good

I've been with Jag since 2002.

This winter I was experiencing occasional downtimes - more than I was used to.

I run an uptime monitor that pings one of my sites periodically. If it fails to connect, it pings more frequently until the site comes back up.

Often, these failures are network errors, not server downtime. But there were some days when the availability was only 96% or 97%. Not terrible, but still noticeable enough that I would get occasional "I tried to log in but the site was down" emails.

The last few weeks, though, my weekly reports have looked like this

date uptime dns connect request ttfb ttlb

Jaguar is a mixed bag. When they are properly configured and in good repair, the servers are great. Unfortunately, their tech people leave somthing to be desired and it is a PITA to get good tech support...I think everyone at Jaguar means well, but the execution of service leaves something to be desired.....

    Agreed!

I've been here almost as long as you...

My site has been hosted on several different servers (and different packages) since 2003.

If you'll notice the 'uptime' link in my sig -- that's a live stat. It's been running since (like) 2005.

Heh! As you said, "pretty damn good"...

Morty, I can't agree with this. My observation is that tech support has declined in quality some over the years, but that is inevitable as a company grows.

Early on, Masood responded to all my tickets himself. That was awesome, because Masood has mad skills, but obviously that doesn't scale infinitely and there's only so many people like that you can find and hire at any price.

So yeah, they aren't what they were in that respect, but 99% of the time I don't need someone with mad skills and it isn't cost effective to hire gurus to deal with routine tasks.

I don't really care to pay four times as much to have access to Masood for every request ticket. I've only filed 26 tickets in 8 years and most of these were utterly routine things. In all cases, things were handled quickly and competently. There were only a couple of cases where things had to be bumped up to a more senior tech.

On the other hand, I've hosted at places for eight times the cost of Jag, and the tech support people were total morons. Like I mean I had to reverse engineer their shopping cart and rewrite the manual for them. I plugged in values for two days to see what would happen and put it all into a matrix and figured it out. They were utterly useless.

Granted, hosts like that are out of business now, but I've also done some freelance work and dealt with a lot of hosts - at least a dozen. None cheaper than Jag on up to ones that are about 3x for shared hosting. I have not found one better than Jag with respect to support or offerings.

Some are as good, some are worse, and some are a *lot* worse.

So to some extent I agree - yeah, I wish everyone doing tech support at Jag had the skills to equal Masood, but frankly, I wouldn't pay for that kind of support unless I had serious, serious enterprise needs (which I don't).

I will add, when I say "some are as good" why don't I use them? Because they seem as good in the month I get to see them while doing client work. But I have eight years at Jag and have never had a major complaint.

I've sent several friends here, who are all happy, ranging from people who are like "What's Wordpress" to full-time web developers who have dedicated servers elsewhere and were looking for budget hosting for some small projects.

I've put some client sites on here, who are all happy.

Before I found Jag, every time I found a good host, it would last liek six months to a year and then they would grow too fast, support went to ****, servers became very unstable and it was unmanageable. I think I went through 5-6 hosts before I got here and I haven't dared to try anyone else, because prior to Jag my experiences were all so negative.

Maybe hosting has gotten better and I coudl find good hosting elsewhere now, but I'm just not willing to take the chance.

So I wouldn't call Jag perfect by any means. Sure, I was a little miffed at regularly getting 96% uptime days this winter. but in the real world of budget hosting, I seriously doubt I would get much better (that's probably higher than Twitter did for a long time). And lately, with consistent 100% success reports... I'm very happy agani.
