    Question Sub-domain Problem

Let me start off by saying I did submit a ticket for this just a few minutes ago and I know full well they are playing catch-up, so the reason I'm asking is that I may have done something incorrectly and thought I would ask.

I just created a new Sub-domain on my www.husted.cc account called forums.husted.cc using the control panel. It said it was successfully created. If I go to www.husted.cc/forums/ the forums come up no problem. However, if I go to forums.husted.cc I get an error message about the page being unable to be displayed. My question is:

Is there a time lag that may need to pass before this takes effect? I have another Sub-domain that I set up about a year ago and is working fine but I can't remember if it was immediate or a small delay or not.

If not a delay, do you have any ideas what the problem could be?

    Thanks in advance.

Ok, Sometimes there is like a 2 hour wait time. It matters on how the dns server is set-up. Just wait a couple hours or so.

Thanks for the response. I thought there 'might' be a delay but I couldn't remember. I'll keep checking it and if it comes up I'll modify my ticket so they don't waste time on it.

There's almost always a delay when dealing with DNS records. It matters when the DNS server Updates.

If you don't want to wait for subdomains to resolve, ask support to enable wildcarding in your DNS zone. That will make anything.yourdomain.com resolve to your site's IP address. If the request is for a subdomain, Apache will figure it out and show the proper page. Otherwise it will display your home page.

Since things are still a little hectic for support, I'd wait a couple days before making the request, though, since this is anon-critical request.

Oh, that's a good idea. But make sure they only do it in the DNS and not apache. Cause if you put the wildcard in apache. Your sub-domains will no work. Cause it'll always go to your main site.

So ask for wildcards in the DNS only!

I dont' want to cause any more problems so I'll just wait a bit to see when it comes up. This isn't a critical situation or any rush so I'll just wait and see what happens.

That's probably the best thing to do. With everything happening. It's probably just to let it wait out.

Well I did already have the folder "forums" created, so I hope that doesn't mess anything up.

I didn't do any of the other things though. Hopefully I'm just waiting for the DNS change to take hold.

Everything should be fine PA-Scott. Just wait for the DNS to start resolving. A couple weeks ago, however, I created a subdomain and the DNS update never happened until I contacted support. I'm not sure why, as I've never had that problem before. I think it was probably a CPanel bug or something. Anyhoo...if it doesn't start working automatically in a day or two, I'd contact support (which it seems like you are already planning to do to request wildcarding).

Well it's now been over 2 days and it's still not updated. I have my support ticket out there from Saturday, but no response as of yet.

The good news is Jag has cleaned up all my other tickets, including one that was submitted AFTER this one, which means they must be prioritizing by subject.

5 days and counting since I opened up the trouble ticket. Is JPC still that far behind on the trouble tickets? Again, this is not a major issue but it has been 5 days.

Ok. What I would do is delete the sub-domain. And re-create it. Sometimes that works!
