    Tracking Down Disk Usage

Is there a quick and easy way to find out which directories are using up the most disk space in my account? I am approaching my disk space limit, and don't know why.

    Thanks.

log into your site via ssh, cd into your home directory, and run the command du --max-depth=1. This will show the total space by directory in bytes. See man du for more details.

This is very strange. I've run du, and the most disk usage that I can find is 148 MB. I deleted my MySQL databases. My account page still reports 308 MB used (which is way over quota). Any ideas about where I could be hiding 160 MB?

Try email accounts, trash bin, deleted items folder etc.

The 148 MB includes everything in my home directory, including mail. There are a bunch of files in my trash bin in the file manager, but when I click the "Empty trash" link, nothing happens. If I try to view a file in the trash (none of which look familiar), I get this message: "can't read `core' (Permission denied)."

check the /temp folder in your main ftp directory- all the stats programs have cache files that get really big over time and you have to delete them (deleting them won't stop the stats from working it will auto create a new one)

    Thanks for your help.

As it turns out, something like 2/3 of my total disk space was being used by the stats programs. Does this seem right? Is it really necessary to have all that disk space used up by a bunch of stats programs?

    Hey Whistler,

Thanks for asking the question. I was about to post a question asking the same thing. I recently noticed that MY file sizes seemed to balloon overnight as well. Fortunately I think I will still have enough space for a while, though.
