It's called a fav icon. When someone bookmarks your site, they will see the favicon in their favorites list in IE. It also works in Opera, and it may work in other browsers too. Just upload favicon.ico to your public_html folder, and that should do it.
Hrm... I could be wrong about this, but I really don't think it's that easy. I went down this favicon.ico road once before, and the icons have to be a certain size, and a certain color count and a bunch of other bull. Otherwise they don't work, no matter where you put them.Originally posted by Joshua Clinard

Here's the proggy I use to do them:

Thanks...that article was perfect.
Like I said, I've been down this road before. I have a favicon on my site. The only problem with favicon's is, when users clear the history in their browser, the icons go away; never to return. The favicon's are still there, sitting on their hard drive. They just quit displaying. I have never figured out a way to make them come back. It's almost like voodoo.
Anyway, it's a lot of work for nothing IMHO, but you might as well find that out for yourself...![]()

I use Safari (Mac) and every url I pull up shows the "favicon". It is working great....

IE doesn't automatically display the favicon. You probably wouldn't know about the favicon unless you happen to bookmark a page, after which the favicon will appear next to the bookmark (I guess that's how it got its name.) Or, you could drag the default "e" graphic down a little and release, and the favicon will display.Originally posted by Vin DSL

On the other hand, Opera and Mozilla will display the favicon when the page loads. Opera will also display the favicon on the window tab, to the left of the page title. Opera will not display the favicon next to the bookmark, however.
Well, I'll be a SOB! How did you figure that out? I went to my site, dragged the 'e' icon to the end of the URL for my site in the addy window, the screen refreshed, and my site favicon magically returned to the 'Links' bar.Originally posted by Tim

I believe I originally read it on favicon.com a couple years ago when I was looking for info on making favicons.Originally posted by Vin DSL
