Question Jag and/or Mods: Got a question about Chatrooms...

I'm going to make this very brief (for me), then go to bed. Hopefully I will have an answer when I wake. I've had 3 hours sleep in the last 48 hours and just finished working 24 hours straight...

As you may or may not know, I have a Nuke site, which is written entirely in PHP. Although I've only been involved in the Nuke community for a couple of months, I'm getting somewhat of a rep as a bug chaser. I'm modding on a Nuke development site, blah, blah and blah...

I never have liked chatrooms all that much, but now I find myself involved in a chatroom project, written in PHP and designed for use on PHP-Nuke sites. I have been testing it on my site. Although it uses a flat file database at this point, it seems to be very easy in regard to server load, from what I can tell. I've worked on it for a few days and everything is looking good. However, I don't want to spend much more time on it if I can't use it on my own site.

Here's the question: is it okay to run a flat file chatroom, written in PHP on JaguarPC, or is this a no-no? I can supply you with the code if you want to see it. Here is a link to the chatroom[s]:

    http://www.lenon.com/menthol.php

It isn't linked, nor will it every be, to any other site, et cetera. It is basically a stand-alone product, which is being integrated into the PHP-Nuke proggy.

Thanks! I'm going to go passout now...

I believe this is a no-no. Jag will probably say no.

Well, that's fine, either way. I just wanted to know for sure. I did a quick search on this web board and couldn't find a definitive answer.

Having poured over this code for several days, it seems to be VERY innocuous. Put another way, the code is short, simple, and efficient. This proggy is something new and different.

I think there is a chatroom proggy available in the control panel. I've never tried it, 'cause like I said, I really don't like chatrooms. However, this has peaked my interest now. So, if nothing else, maybe I can hack that code and make a PHP-Nuke module out of it.

Let me know which direction to take. I'll search the board a little more in the meantime...

EDIT: BTW, I'm a little slow today. I was just thinking, I remember pondering this subject in the past. Someone said they had a chatroom on their site, and my initial impression, from reading the AUP, was this is a no-no. I started clicking the 'WWW' buttons at the bottom of ppl's messages, and there are chatrooms all over the place on shared JagPC servers. I don't know if you guys realize this. Many of them were simply hyperlinks to chatroom servers elsewhere, but some were 'in-house', so to speak. Anyway, a clarification is in order, I believe.

Hrm... is there a JagPC chatroom somewhere that I don't know about

Programs : We do not allow programs to run continually in the background. This is to minimize system resources used and operational maintenance needed. We do not allow any chat or topsite programs on our servers other than the ones we pre-install for our clients to use. IRC: We currently DO NOT allow IRC or IRC bots to be operated on our servers.
This seems pretty sell explanatory, however, as stated in the TOS, things can change around here at any time. The fact that others are running chatrooms makes me think the policy is to overlook chatrooms.

IRC bots are universally prohibited at EVERY hosting service I've ever been on. This is a given.

Furthermore, it would appear that chatrooms are okay if JagPC pre-installs them for clients. What is the process for having JagPC install a chatroom for you?

Sorry for being a PITA, but I'm confused. Maybe it's from overwork and a lack of sleep, but I don't think so...

Try emailing Greg or something, you may get a better answer.

    k. For a basis of comparison, here's JagPC's Melange chatroom wrapped in Nuke. Looks pretty kludgey IMHO...

Guess I'll try Entrophy next. Those are the only two chatroom proggies that JagPC has in the control panel...

I use sigmachat from www.sigmachat.com - its a pretty slick java chat and Ive had it about a year.

For a while I used there free service, but I recently upgraded to there $100 a year service and have integrated the chatroom to authenticate members from my YaBBSE forum database.

    Although.....

Word on the street says that greg was playing with the idea of having a dedicated chatserver - but this was before the move.

A flat file chat? Sounds pretty intensive. Why not just write for MySQL?
