Make sure that you've set up Outlook to authenticate on the SMTP server before trying to send mail. Also, some ISP's block outbound SMTP traffic, so that my explain why Outlook can't find the server. If that's the case, you'll have to use your ISP's SMTP server to send mail.

Also, some ISP's block outbound SMTP traffic, so that my explain why Outlook can't find the server. If that's the case, you'll have to use your ISP's SMTP server to send mail.
There have been several discussions about this over the last 1 1/2
years or so. That is approximately the time that ISP's started
requiring you send e-mail through their server. The explanation
is to control Spam. At least that is what Earthlink told me
when I contacted them about this. One day I could send mail through
our sever, the next day I couldn't. There were no warnings about
    the change in policy.

It might be helpful to compile a list of ISP's who will not allow
you to send e-mail through your web site, because this question
    keeps coming up.

    To start the List:
    Earthlink
    Sprint
Galaxy which has now changed to Cyberlink
    ATT (possibly but probably)

There is a plus side to this. The recipient of your e-mail will not
know that the e-mail was sent through your ISP. You will not use any
bandwidth or whatever that would be used if sending e-mail through your
    domain.

The downside is when you use multiple ISP's with the same computer. For example, right now I am using my laptop at home with Road Runner. When I'm at work or in class, I'm on my school's network with their own SMTP servers. This weekend I was at my Mom's using the laptop on her cable--Charter Pipeline. And I've used the laptop at the coffeehouse down the street who uses who knows what.

I can use Road Runner's SMTP server from home, but no where else. Same goes for Pipeline's at my mom's. At the cafe, I have no idea what to use. I can use my school's servers from anywhere, as long as I connect to the VPN first.

Lucky for me, none of these providers blocks me from using server's SMTP service. If they did, I'd have to change my settings every time I tried to send mail from a different location.

Jason, your right. Forgot about that and that is a big downside.

Jason, Outlook Express allows you to define number of mail accounts, each with its own POP3 and SMTP servers.
When you start a new message, just select an appropriate account in the From line.

I used Netscape for all my mailing needs for years, but I finally gave up: 2 weeks without Netscape - I am going to get my anniversary medallion soon

Actually, the newest version of the program I use, Pegasus Mail (http://www.pmail.com) now allows you to set up multiple SMTP servers for each account. I haven't tried it out yet, but it looks like it tries each server in the order you list them until your message gets sent.

I'm in hte minority here, it looks like--none of the ISP's that I use regularly limit SMTP traffic. I don't know how long that will last, though, so it doesn't hurt to investigate my options...

You can also set up multiple accounts with different POP and SMTP servers using my favorite email program Eudora (http://www.eudora.com/). Eudora calls these "personalities" and they're very easy to use within the program.

I don't know if you're minority Jason, those that can send the e-mails usually have no reason to get out on these boards and complain about it..

No such blocks for me either. ISP's: UPC - Chello (Netherlands), Tiscali ASDL by KPN, Betuwenet, and Twente University. [Each does block relaying to their SMTP from another network, as is pretty standard by now.]
