    Wildcarded DNS?

    Hi,

I am trying to install a script which is a redirect service for my members - similar to beam.to - so their associate link can be shortened.

THe script programmer sent me this info...

"you need to add a DNS record to allow wildcarded DNS. That way anything.yourdomain.com resolves to www.yourdomain.com"

Could anybody help me clarify this so I can set it up on Jags hosting?

    Many Thanks,

    Ade

A DNS zone file consists of a list of subdomains for your domain (such as www, forums, mail, ftp, etc) and the IP address that each resolves to. A wildcard is a record at the end of the list that is simply a *. The a request comes in, the DNS server goes down the list until it comes to either the * or the actual name that's being searched ans it returns the associated IP.

Wildcarded DNS is not set up by default here, but if you ask for it in a support ticket, they'll set it up for you. They did for me when I was having trouble getting some subdomains to resolve and it was taken care of literally within minutes of my opening the ticket.
