    Unhappy I'm a newb, help

I just had a domain hosted by Jaguar. I'm trying to get our e-mails set up but they're not working. We're using the following for our site, thecol.net.

    SMTP: mail.thecol.net
    POP: mail.thecol.net

    We've also tried the following.

    SMTP: thecol.net
    POP: thecol.net

Also, when Outlook Express is trying to recieve/send, it says it's "dialing" and I use LAN. It can't locate a connection because I don't even have "dial up". How can I change this?

There's a lot of people counting on me to get this runnig. I would appreciate any e-mails or replies to help me. Please be clear, I'm a total newb that got stuck doing this.

    Thanks!!!

I don't think you need the mail. in the server names

    SMTP: mail.thecol.net
    POP: mail.thecol.net

    should be (I think)

    SMTP: thecol.net
    POP: thecol.net

I wouldn't think the "dialing" problem is an outlook problem. Are you connecting OK with your browser? If not you have to set up the connection to LAN with network control panel.

You don't need the "mail" in the server names, but it doesn't hurt anything if you have it in there, either.

I'm not an Outlook user, but I think the dialing thing is due to the fact that the computer can't find the server on the network connection that it already has, so its trying a different one. I've seen Internet Explorer do this if you have both a LAN and Dial Up Networking installed.

I pulled up your whois record and it shows that you are using the domain-services.com DNS servers. These are the default ones that you can use when you register a domain name and don't have hosting yet and you just want to put up a "coming soon" page or when you want to do your own DNS management. Unless you specifically set up your own domain management on those servers, then the problem is that you name isn't resolving correctly. You should change them to at least two of the servers on the network status page, such as ns.jaguarpc.net and ns2.jaguarpc.net. (Note that the change will take a couple days to become effective.)

    Wow, lots of info!

Okay, I set the servers to thecol.net only and changed the connection to my LAN. Still have the same problem. I'll keep hacking away at that one.

You say I need to change the servers? Okay, I'm going to go ahead and look into doing it but just in case, can you tell me how so I have that at my fingertips?

Thanks guys. Don't worry, I'll be a gooroo in no time. ;oP

    Hi,

    Here, try this.

    http://www.thecol.net:2082/frontend/...paccounts.html

Log in - and for the account you want to access. on the right side of it. The far right side.

Click on the link that says "Outlook (Express) AutoConfig"

    And that should work.

If not. Please let me know what O/S you have? If it's either XP or ME or 98. Cause there have been problems with OutLook with XP that I know of.

The process for changing your DNS servers varies for every registrar out there. It looks like you registered your domain through JPC, which I have never done, so I can't walk you through it step by step, but I'll do my best to explain it.

Go to www.aletianic.com, JPC's registration site. Click the link at the top of the page that says login. You should have a username and password for the AletiaNIC site, enter them.

Once inside, you should get a list of domains that you have registered (you may need to click on a couple links to get ot it). Find thecol.net in the list and do whatever you need to do to edit the domain (click a link, press a button, etc).

From there you should have some way of changing your DNS servers (sometimes called nameservers). You'll want to select this. Then you'll want to change them to

    ns.jaguarpc.net
    ns2.jaguarpc.net

(You can also add ns3.jaguarpc.net, ns4.jaguarpc.net, ns5.jaguarpc.net, and ns6.jaguarpc.net if you wnat, but only two are required.)

Do whatever you need to do to save your changes and then wait (probably about 2-3 days) for the changes to make their way across the Internet.

Maybe someone else who has more experience with the JPC system can be more helpful, but this should give you the gist of what needs to be done. Since you registered with JPC, you can probably open a support ticket and have them take care of this for you as well.

    Good luck.

Okay, got it resolving and I'm working on the e-mail issue. It's apparently something I need to "turn on" so I'm trying that.

    Thanks!!
