How to measure DNS lookup times?

Hi,

is there a way to measure what the DNS lookup times are from a Windows XP machine to another server? Is there a way to do it for Linux as well?

I suspect my DNS server is slow as F#¤%...

Thanks.

Not sure about windows, usually in linux, you can run a dig, like

dig domain.com @ns1.mynameserver.com

and towards the end of dig results it will show you the time required for the dns lookup:

Query time: xxx msec

About the nameserver, maybe he meant "'my' nameserver" as opposed to "my nameserver".

You have your own nameserver

Is it an open server?
