    Sluggish Performance

One disappointment with my move to a dedicated server is that it seems not a bit faster than my SDX account.

Being completely inexperienced my chief concern is to not screw things up. But I can’t see opening a support ticket saying “Make it run faster.”

Is there an “Idiot’s Guide” someone could point me to?

I don't know of an all inclusive link but there are always things that can be done. I know you said you didn't want to, but I recommend opening a ticket and outlining what you see/feel is sluggish and the techs might be able to offer suggestions.

    Les,

I did ask that anything that could be done to optimize the server for CGI scripts be done when the server was setup.

I’m sufficiently intimidated by the server right now that I’m afraid of asking for more than I should. I figured I’d explore some of the webmastering forums.

Right now all I could tell tech support is that it is slower than my SDX account. Not very helpful. But I’ll open a ticket if I don’t learn something useful on my own.

    Thanks.

I finally did report it and discovered that I have less memory on a dedicated server than I did on my SDX account. Didn't pay enough attention when I signed up.

Given that I like many webmasters was hit by Google's Jagger update paying $500 a year for extra ram isn't a real option. Indeed, I may be better off going back to the SDX account.

Then again, if Google smiles at me, who knows ...

Oh, what the heck. I'll try adding 512. If that isn't enough then I can decide.

There's more available RAM on the semi-dedicated servers, but you have to compete with others for available RAM. On a dedicated machine, you don't have this competition.

Eric, I was just quoting the tech support person.

Since the old SDX account I moved to dedicated the the still existing account on SDX were faster than the dedicated server with 512 I was probably the memory pig on each machine.

And what a happy difference that extra memory makes. I should've opened a ticket sooner. Stubborness isn't always a virtue.

So some extra ram made all the difference for you?

    Yep. All if fine now.

My fault for not paying attention to what I was paying for. I wouldn't build a home machine with less than a Gig in it.

    Thanks

Yeah there's more to it than jsut putting it on a dedicated server and letting it run.

There are several thread out there that have some tips. I put one together over in the VPS forum that details alot of my expierence when I first got my ded box.
