Hi,
do you guys update/upgrade/patch your vps apps like apache, mysql, php, phpmyadmin, etc on your own or rely on jagpc support to do the upgrade? Just wondering though since sign up until now i have never come across vps apps upgrade announcement.
This is a discussion on who is responsible for updating or patching vps apps? in the VPS & Dedicated forum

I believe that the user is responsible, but I think that if you put in a ticket then support will do it for you. They won't auto upgrade.. at least they better not![]()
We can completely manage this aspect for you. We don't go in and actively monitor what versions you're using, but you can open a ticket and request that we upgrade any server wide applications for you.Originally Posted by vod_
Wondering.. is there some sort of notification service (newsmail) that you guys send out whenever you patch up an application on the shared servers for security reasons? If there isn't yet, I suppose you can please a lot of VPS and dedicated users with relatively little work![]()

i would also hope for the same thing. when there's a new patch of base applications (eg. apache, mysql, php, etc) is available, especially security fixes, VPS customers get informed, get advised whether to upgrade and get the option whether to request jagpc support to install the patch.
From the announcement section, it seems that VPS is the package that jagpc does not provide base applications update. Like the recent php upgrade.

My opinion...
Please limit it to core applications. Some of us do allready monitor the software we are running and I don't want to have to weed through a long email.![]()
Yeah, but that's a bit beyond the point, seeOriginally Posted by the_ancient

If I'd have a VPS / dedicated, I'd be most happy to defer mainly to JagPCs judgement of which upgrade in that daily renewing myriad is really a must and to never hear about ones that are (probably) not worth the effort. In that way I'd avoid an info and upgrade-work overload. I suppose the folk at Jag allready have some way to weed through all that to keep their shared servers safe and functional.

When i did a yum update recently, yum told me that there is a total of 256 updates. some of them i think could be unneccessary while the others like openssh, openssl, bind, etc may be just as important as apache, php, etc as newer version did fix security holes.
1 other thing and probably should be the top of the update list (to have the most recent and stable version) that vps owner may not be able or should not update on their own is kernel update. it will be really great if kernel monitoring is included. we are told when new version is out and being adviced whether an upgrade is recommended and fits our needs.
Nearly all of the VPS providers provide managed service. One of the competitor (not going to mention here) provides only semi-managed service and the service indeed include base applications moitoring, upgrade and patches. That is ofcourse ONLY what they claim it will be. I have not tried them. But since JagPC provide fully-managed VPS, i believe including such feature will definitely be a plus. Up to date applications may not be an important consideration when a customer sign up for jagpc however what will happen when a vps owner which, usually also a reseller, found that his vps is compromised due to non up to date applications? this could be fatal. To the worst, they will probably start looking elsewhere as this hurt their business.
just my 2 cents![]()
Just curious but doesn't Massod post updates?

All I'm saying is that I have a VPS for several reason amoung the top reason is that I wanted to run a version of PHP I was comfortable with, along with the extensions that I needed compiled with it. Same goes for Apache and MySQL. I run custom config files for each.
I don't think I'm alone in this either. Call it Fully Managed if you like, but it should mean that Jag will only update the apps that I request. I am confident that, that is how they do business as well.
But we are getting way off trackA weekly app release email would be cool. I just would imagine it would get a bit bloated with apps that some care about and others don't.
