    VPS firewall

    Hi,

Anyone of you running own firewall on your vps? is it necessary? i have tried to install apf but failed due to missing modules. contacted jagpc support and have been told that apf is not supported. so i can not install. Is it safe to leave the vps as it is without own firewall?

    thanks

    use this one

    http://vpsinfo.nixhost.net/firewall.htm

it has step by step instructions and choose the corresponding control panel (cpanel, directadmin, no panel, etc.)

    Hi,

All the files are identical and it seems that the requried port for control panel is not set to "open/accept". eg. directadmin use port 2222 but there is no command/directive in the script to open/accept connection for port 2222.

don't click on the links because it points to the same URL, just copy the instructions as is

I happen to be using directadmin and I used the one for directadmin

    wget -O /etc/init.d/firewall http://vpsinfo.nixhost.net/firewall.directadmin.vps

    it has access to 2222

APF is supported, but we don't have any servers with all modules installed so it would require a reboot of the physical node in order to include them. We'll be doing this on the next server updates for the Virtuozzo software and our next VPS node will also be setup to include these modules. We can easily migrate your account if needed at that time.

We'll have a new VPS server setup this week, but we won't be taking down any current machines to add these modules unless a critical Virtuozzo update comes out. When the new server is setup, we can migrate you if you wish.

You set it up so effectively that you locked yourself out to, eh?

Isn't there something that you can do through your virtuozzo panel? (The one that stays up when the VPS itself is down)?

If not, I'd really suggest you take the quick route for this one: a support ticket.
-- If it were me, I certainly wouldn't be waiting for "maybe they see it" in a forum if my whole site was down, even if it was due to my own most stupid action ever..

I'm confused! Don't mean to hijack the thread, but...

When you order VPS here, do you get WHM/Cpanel (like during the trials) or VZ?

if you've changed your ssh from 22 into a different port then you should've changed port on the script before enabling it.

and if I may quote the instruction

This is where the security concious will not take our word for anything and thoroughly read the script first. Go ahead, we'll wait.

Virtuozzo controls the VPS instances on the server. WHM/CP, if desired, can be added to an instance. Virtuozzo is sort of like a CPanel for your OS, where CPanel itself is a controller for your individual accounts.

Its not a great pic, but this will show you how the Virtuozzo panel is used: http://www.jaguarpc.com/images/powerpanel.gif

    Okay, thanks!

My recommendations for VPS on JagPC, pro and con, have been predicated on it coming with WHM/cPanel alone. However, VZ is a whole different matter, isn't it?

    Hrm...

Guess I should check into it again!

You (can) get all of them, a whole palet full of panels

The Virtuozo panel comes "on top" of it all; you can control your server with it from the "outside". A real, physical, dedicated server wouldn't have more than an off and perhaps a hard-reset switch on the outside of its box, but as a VPS is actually a server existing virtually inside other software, they can offer you a few buttons more.

.. and I thought it would be worth to check if one of those could perhaps force some form of root access no matter what - like you can force access when you are actually at the console.
