    VPS Backup

    Jag, Eric, Les, Whomever,

Could one purchase The Longhorn plan and use it for backing up a VPS vrs. using the 10gig backup plan?

Is there any advantage to purchasing the 10 gig backup plan over having The Longhorn account to do the backup to if it is allowed?

I need to get some backup going, my other host will not like the idea of me ftping files there each night. The account is not supposed to be used for backup. I will leave that host for here totally when my time is up. I am a JaguarPC fan! (Anyone reading these forums that last week can see that. They must be saying "does that Frank ever shut up, or even sleep?")

    Thanks,

The Longhorn plan has web, email, and mysql support whereas the backup plans as just filespace. I doubt JPC would have a problem with you using a Longhorn plan for backup (although the do require a domain name be associated with the account--backup.yourdomain.com would probably be OK, though), of course I've never asked this, so I don't know for sure.

-> 4 more GB of diskspace

-> And perhaps a marginally smaller chance of "trouble"; a shared webserver probably gets a good deal more stuff thrown at it than a back-up one. (Both from inside, i.e. through actions from its own users, and outside, i.e. by script-kiddies spotting it as a potential target).

We would prefer you use the backup services for backup use, but we don't have a problem with you using a Longhorn plan either if it doesn't cause problems for other users on the server. I don't see incremental backups being a problem, but if you're transferring multiple GBs of data each night, this may pose a problem on the shared server and we might ask you to use the backup services.

You won't per chance be avoiding the whole matter by setting up 6 GB backup accounts at Longhorn price level?
