    Suggestions For Busy Days

I have a clipart site (hot-linking allowed) that gets bombarded on holidays. The St. Patty's Day rush killed my server 6x. I've been doing some research and some have suggested moving all images to a new server. That's costly. Is there anything I can do now to help with the surge of traffic on certain days, without buying a new server? I am on the Freedom VPS plan. Thanks.

    Interesting! Distributed hosting...

On face value, something doesn't seem right about this. Does 'Coral' et al maintain these servers, or is it simple a confederation of pirates trying to obfuscate thievery?

I noticed their 'clients' use Coral to serve files, music, movies, and so forth.

That sets off warning bells for me...

    Bah! That listing is BS!

I was looking at the source code on Leo's page. Example:
    PHP Code:

Hrm... What do 'we' have here?

We're going to try a new method here on the Squid's Redoubt Top Ten Podcast. A service called CORAL promises to do distributed network transfer of files called in a certain way through the system.

Well, given I end up having to wait a day or more to get things accepted on Archive, I think its worth giving them a shot. Pointedly, CORAL has to cache the files once called, so if that ends up taking longer than you expect, congratulations, you're the first one to listen to it! Wallow in the pleasure!

With that in mind, I've also increased the bitrate of the 'cast to a whopping 128! Now you can burn your copy to CD and enjoy the highest fidelity of me ranting and gooning possible.

    So, without further ado ...

(Some people have noted there seems to be some trouble pulling the CORAL coded podcast. I'll update the link and the post if there's any improvement, or Archive comes through. Sigh.)

(Further update: Link changed to Archive solution. So much for that little experiment ...)
    Their inferred 'recommendation'?

Heh! I never paid any attention to this feature before, even though I've been on 'archive.org' a zillion times...

    Here's a good one!

I dunno what the deal is on Coral. All I know is that when a page has been 'dugg' it always allows you to see what was there. It keeps a cache almost like a proxy I guess so that it doesn't over load the server.

coralcdn.org is very interesting. I wonder how they do it for free and why they do it... They're a bit slow.

Heh! Well, as fate would have it...

A few minutes ago, I decided to install Torpark on my thumb drive. And, having never heard of Coral until a few minutes ago, I decided to use them to download the app:

    http://torpark.nfshost.com/

Guess what?!?! The download failed! Hahahaha!

I used JTA instead -- which worked fine...

I have no idea what make Coral tick. My site, however, loads things fine through Coral so I have no idea what the deal is. Example

    LoL! This is cool!

I started off by checking out Coral -- got bored -- installed Torpark instead -- now I'm connected to JaguarPC, with my thumbdrive, using Firefox 1.5 via a TOR tunnel connection to Sweden.

I tested it by trying to login to my admin panel, then did a 'whois' on the IP. This is gonna come in handy!

Um... what were 'we' talkin' about?

That's crazy. I dunno why your machine isn't working with it. I just loaded another website using it and it goes through fine every time. Perhaps the port is causing something? It works on port 8090 also.

Someone on here mentioned lighttpd a few weeks ago. I don't recall who it was, but a simple forum search should turn up the thread. That was the first I heard of it, so I started doing some reading up. From what I've read, it is a solid, capable server. I've also discovered a few sites that I visit regularly are using it now, such as [utl=http://www.alistapart.com]A List Apart[/url].

I haven't tried an install of it yet, but it appears to do just about everything Apache does, just mauch faster.
