    qmail vs sendmail debate

    Hello,

We are moving an existing site to our new VPS. On our existing site, we use mailman, and phpbb message board which are configured to use sendmail.

Our admin, who is vary familiar with sendmail, insists that we should not use qmail but set up sendmail instead.

Is there really a big difference between the two and which is the best route to go for these applications?

qmail is already configured and set up with interworx.

    Thanks in advance...

    Gyroman,

I am not really able to answer your question, but if your admin does have more knowledge about sendmail as from another application i would go for the one your admin is best at.

I read some forums after your question about which MTA to use, most common answer is: If you have a need to make a LOT of heavy customizations to your MTA, go with sendmail. Otherwise go with qmail, postfix, or exim.

Sendmail is backed up by a large company, while large does have it's pro's and con's (i.e. sendmail is so popular it has been under attack for a long time) but it also means its getting more safe to use it every time they find a hole. (any software product does have its flaws).

But i think the main point is, you have an admin which is knowledgeable about Sendmail, why switching to another product if that can temper with the stability / safety of your system. (i am in no way saying that qmail wouldn't be safe, but wrong configured software is always a security treat).

Hope this helps, any who knows someone has a better reason to switch

    Kind regards,

    Patrick
