    Setting up private dns servers

Help please? I followed the tutorial but it only tells me how to register them at my registrar. I have followed those steps. Now what? I have a Freedom VPS plan with Interworx control panel. Namecheap is my registrar.

What else should I be doing besides registering the nameservers with the registrar?

Name servers are set as NS3.NOCDIRECT.COM and NS4.NOCDIRECT.COM according to the whois information. Should I be changing those? Is there anything I need to being doing in the Interworx control panel like changing the primary/secondary dns server?

    Hi there,

What exactly do you mean with Name servers are set as, where are they set ? in interworx or at your registrar, giving a domain name might help.

If you use the name-servers of JPC, and you did point the domain to NS3.NOCDIRECT and NS4. ... and this domain has been added by support to these DNS servers, it should be correct.

Again Please give a bit more information about what you try to do. (i.e. domain name) so we can look if its allready loaded in the DNS at JPC and how you configured it.

    Kindest regards,
    Patrick

If you want to set up your own nameservers (ns*.yourdomain.com), you will need to set up a nameserver on your VPS (Interworx probably includes facilities for doing this if it isn't done automatically, but I've never used Interworx). You'll need two IP addresses (the second and third that you get free with your VPS) on wihich to run the DNS "servers."

First, you'll need to get the DNS services running on the VPS. Then you'll need to register the nameservers with your registrar (this is a different process from the registration of your domain name). When the registration is done and you are sure that your private nameserver is working correctly you can then change the DNS servers on your domain registration and after about 24-72 hoours your VPS will begin handing any name lookups for your domain(s).

The domain is elite-systems.org and I have setup the domain to point to those nameservers. I think I already figured out I need to point the domain at the name servers on vps though as the primary and secondary but I am confused about the configuration in interworx as far as how I should be setting it up there. I will be changing my domain to point to ns1.elite-systems.org and ns2.elite-systems.org instead since I already gave the ip addresses for those to namecheap (my registrar).

My main question is do I have to do anything in interworx besides verify that the dns services are running for the vps. They are definately active and are fully aware of my domain name.

Attached are screenshots of the areas I think changes may be needed to make sure everything works right. Please point out if I need to change anything.

Ok. I've done all that. I attached screenshot of certain areas of interworx so if you can see anything that needs changed then please let me know. 69.73.130.223 and 69.73.132.223 resolve to ns.nocdirect.com and ns2.nocdirect.com respectively and they are specified as the nameservers in my zone file by default so I don't know if they should be that way. Also I actually have 5 ip addresses. I requested 2 more right after I signed up so that I have 2 for online stores. I will need a dedicated ip for the ssl part.

Ahhh.... OK. While I was typing this message it started resolving (just the elite-systems.org part) but it also hit me what I should change in the zone information.

Create A records for ns1 and ns2 for elite-systems.org and then change the nameservers to point there...

Thanks for your help. I think I was thinking too hard about it.

Yea. I just have one fail message to fix really. I can make the last warn message go away (change the CNAME record to an A record for www.elite-systems.org). However is there a way to make it so that the mail server ip will have a reverse dns?

EDIT: Actually it would be my website ip too so I would want it to do a reverse to the website url (not specifically to the mail subdomain).

Dont have to mind the reverse, even though its better not to have it but I think its at JPCs end and not the local name server we use

    shinji,

You can request a RDNS for your IP's from support. Give them your IP's and names you want it to resolve too. Make sure these DNS entries already work before asking otherwise they can not set it up.

    Kind regards,
    Patrick
