Question how many vps in one server and MHz for each user

    hello
i am about to get a vps plan at jaguarpc. i need to know though how much computing power i get from the freedom plan ("equal share" of cpu doesn t help much). i didn t see any figure so i tried to calculate with this:

they say that most servers have 4x400 gig hard drivers, it means there is 1,6TB on a server. lets say that users have an average of 20G. that means they put 1600G/20G = 80 users in one server.

from the technology page, they say that they use dual opteron. lets say it is 2x2x2.5GHz = 10GHZ. so each user get only 125Mhz (10Ghz/80users)

doesn t that seem low. it seems that i get more computing power for my $ with a managed server.

or am i wrong with my figures ? i assume that with a RAID hard drive, the real space avalaible is less than 1,6TB but even if we reduce this, we still get very low MHz per user.

    thanx

If you need raw horsepower, VPS may not be the right solution for you. The advantage of VPS is that you're in full control of a virtual environment for a very reasonable price. If you want some raw power, go with a dedicated plan if you need full control, or an SDX (semi-dedicated) plan if you can live in a shared environment.

JAG's plans and environments allow for bursting in CPU and Bandwidth rates.

Also, JAG typically undersells it's disk space based on expected requirements; they've explained it to me as never wanting to have to build a new server and move their clients to it because they're running out of disk space. They'd rather have more disk available than run short.

    Good luck!

I dont think they will put 80 on one node, i have a freedom VPS and i have never been restricted to my guranteed CPU. My vps is always fast and ive not had a problem in years. Also i believe they monitor the nodes and shuffle them round to make sure your getting the best service.

    hello
i think my calculations were wrong, 80 users is too much

those are benchmarks and a guy has its jaguarpc vps 1 / 5th as powerful as an equivalent dedicated server. [but then again, maybe, he took all avalaible burstable ram and cpu]. anyway, thanx for the replies. after considering price vs performance&features, i think the vps plan is good for me.

do you guys know what is "hardened" in "hardened centOS" ?

ron: i need a vps because
1 - i need to fine-tweak apache and mysql and install a couple of modules, maybe even dump apache and use lighttpd
2 - a dedicated server is a too much for my actual needs

i dont know about the hardened CENTOS, but its just likely the O/S template is customized for the node. Probably built with the latest security patches and what-not prebuilt into the vps template (so it doesnt have to be patched when the vps is setup). Anyway im interested in how centos is hardened too, could be interesting (i wonder what version of centos is installed in new vps's).

JoeWall, please let us know how it works out for you -- I for one am very interested in how you perceive the performance of your VPS.

GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!
