    Totally Bodged my VPS Already!

Hi everyone, first post and first time I've used Jag. Seems like a great service and has a good community behind it!

It's also the first time I've ever had to do much server config. I'm having a very hard time understanding DNS/hostnames etc..

Ok so here's the deal. I signed up to my VPS plan with the domain "todayinlinux.org" - which I planned to register. I have now registered it, but with a different provider, because it looked like the reg service for Jag didn't take paypal.

Anywho, I also have todayinlinux.com registered at godaddy. So I set up an account on my VPS for it, and changed the nameservers at godaddy to ns3.nocdirect.com & ns4.nocdirect.com (the ones from my welcome letter).

48 hours went by - no cigar. So i thought I must have some kind of extra step to do. Being me, instead of wisely contacting support - I decided to fiddle.

I have my current hostname set to vps.todayinlinux.org - BUT it is registered elsewhere. #1 - is this an issue?

#2 - What should I set my nameservers as? I think I set up a nameserver on one of my ip's earlier, being a dumbass I never recorded my changes, so I'm not 100% sure.

#3 todayinlinux.com - the one with an account on my VPS, does not resolve (nor does .org) - so I'm guessing it's a config issue on my part. Dnsstuff.com DNS Lookup goes in a loop - which is confusing, and I have no idea why it does this.

Sorry for the long winded post, just looked for some small guidance if possible! Thanks ever-so much in advance

VPS and nameservers.. it seems to be confusing stuff.

Thing is: your VPS comes with 3 IPs, of which two are meant to be used to run your own nameservers. So, additional domains you run on your VPS, like that .com, are normally set-up on those two nameservers you run yourself, NOT on the JagPC ones. If you have an ns and ns2.todayinlinux.org set-up, try pointing your .com to those.

So.. what about those from the welcome letter? Well, they go for the primary domain only, the todayinlinux.org, on which in turn your own nameservers should be running.

If you do not want this, see if support can arrange otherwise for you. Most VPS owners like it this way, because it makes them look more independent from JagPC to their own clients.

Thank you for the very helpfull reply! It is much appreciated

One final question that's holding me up - where do I assign the nameservers for todayinlinux.org? I'm using Cpanel.

    Thanks very much!

Don't worry - after I posted that I realised what a stupidly dumb question that was. Sorry!

Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it! Take care and all the best.

    OK, more troubles

Dreamhost, where the todayinlinux.org domain is registered - are saying to point it to THEIR nameservers. I am a bit confused as I thought I would direct it to ns3/4.nocdirect.com.

And then direct todayinlinux.com to ns1/2.todayinlinux.org after setting two of my IP's up with nameservers.

Am i getting something wrong here, or are dreamhost wrong?

    Thanks as always

It's ok, just emailed tech support at jag, and they have found the problem and said it will be fixed in a short while!

Apparantly, the DNS zone on jag's DNS server wasn't set up yet

Thanks everyone - this forum and jag's support have convinced me I have made a very good choice of host

Just wanted to say, this was the hardest part for me to understand also.
Once I did some research and asked some questions here and
jag support, it all came together.

So don't beat yourself up over (what you think) is a dumb question.
name servers and domain pointing was my biggest challenge with my new vps.

Jag also has some awesome tutorials on domain pointing and nameservers.
