    Unhappy VPS newbie requesting help

My VPS (freedom plan) was set up on the andromeda server today (thanks sales/support).

I poked the necessary holes in my local firewall (which is kept very tight) in order to log into the various interfaces (JaguarPC panel, Virtuosso, WHM) and have been successful in connecting to all of them.

I was eventually able to set up my two nameservers on the 2nd and 3rd IP addresses. WHM insisted on trying to use the primary IP address, so I faked it out a bit (not hard).

    1. During WHM setup, there is a section called 'Resolver Configuration'. The WHM configuration wizard states that the Resolver IPs should be changed from the default, otherwise, the server will be slow. It lists three spaces for IP addresses. The first is blank and the next two are whatever the default is (69.73.130.223 and 69.73.132.223). What, if anything, should these be set to?

    2. Neither httpd nor mysql is running and cannot be successfully restarted (I tried several times) from the Virtuozzo panel. The activity log doesn't give any helpful information (#703 Can not start/stop/restart service: ...).

    3. I would ssh in to check logs and things manually , except the ssh interface started from Virtuozzo doesn't respond, even though it says it is connected and I can see the ssh service started in Virtuozzo. I see a nice Java GUI with a big black area (the input/output area?) and some status messages indicated connected. But there is no prompt in the I/O window, nor will it echo any keystrokes. Naturally, my linux box at home has just decided to fail , so I don't have it's ssh application to connect from and don't have one installed on any of my Windows boxes, yet.

    4. I am also trying to set up an ftp program (starting with WS_FTP pro version 7.5), but I don't know what security settings should be used. I can also use CuteFTP pro, version 7.1. But, I need information about security settings. I'm making the assumption that I should use the same user (root) and password as I would theoretically be using for ssh.

I know some of these questions could go through support, but I figured I try here first. I don't want to get into the habit of harrassing them. It just might be that I'm missing a step or two or some very basic information.

In prior incarnations I have been sysadmin on Solaris based boxes and have had a lot of experience in recent years in the LAMP and WAMP (windows/apache/mysql/php) worlds. I've done those installations a lot (inevitably, the first three or four times don't work right).

I appreciate any help and insights (incites not so welcome, but I'm a good listener) into these problems.

    Thank you all in advance.

I dont know what did go wrong, but personally i would not use the java applet in virtuozzos panel, i would even go so far, that i wouldnt use the file editor in there as i have seen corrupted files coming out of that.

If you want SSH on a windows box, i recommend to use PuTTY a free SSH client. It can be downloaded here :

    http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html

For a windows scp client look at: http://winscp.net/

I suppose you made sure that port 22 is open in your firewall, even while you use the java aplet, it will need to access your machine thru port 22.

    Kindest regards,
    Patrick

Most ftp servers prohibit login by root for security reasons, this is something i adive you to keep as a rule.

And if you really need to transfers files from root, use SCP to transfer them as root.

    Thanks guys.

I got my ftp connection working using CuteFTP (it has ssh2, which is apparently the right connection type).

I'd forgotten about PuTTY. I'll get that installed relatively quickly. I had it installed on one of my boxes ages ago, but that box has had at least one reinstall since then (Windows can be very flaky, sometimes).

I've submitted a ticket to the support guys to help get the domain visible (I think I have everything set correctly, but still can't 'see' it in a browser).

I received an e-mail from CPanel last Friday. Apparently, the first IP address in the Resolve Configuration is supposed to be the main one for the VPS account. Unless I hear otherwise, I assume the others should stay the default.
