Moving existing accounts into a VPS

Where can I get some information on moving my existing Jag accounts to my new VPS? I can do the brute force method of saving down then reuploading, but I thought there was an easier way. I've got several databases, including some stuff in a few CMSs, so I'd like to transplant things as cleanly as possible. The existing accounts are cPanel, and the VPS is running InterWorx.

Also, and I feel like a complete idiot for asking this, but how do I FTP stuff between servers without stopping by my own machine first? I've done it in the past, but I think I had better root access on at least one of the machines....

    I'm jealous!

Personally, I find something that works and stick with it. If it was me, I'd simply TAR my site, and do a dump -- transplant these via SSH to my local PC (that way I'd have a current backup) then upload it to the new site.

While the TAR was uploading, I create the sql dbs, users and so forth, then restore the data after I unTARed the site.

Guess I'm a trogladite... that is pretty brutish!

ftp will work jus' fine from machine to machine

Login through SSH into either machine and type
    "ftp <ip addy>"

But I thought that Interworx was going to create a CPanel mover? Maybe check with JAG?

When you're ready, please let us know all the particulars, like whichplan you went with and any performance comparisons you've got. Thanks!

Have a blast with your VPS!!!

In WHM on your VPS there is an option for moving all your sites over, its very efficient and works really well.

Once you enter your whm panel, half way down on the LHS there is a section called Transfers

In that section you have the following options:

Copy an account from another server
Copy an account from another server with account password
Copy multiple accounts from an Alab*nza server
Copy multiple accounts from another server
    Review Copied Accounts

    Hope this helps

    Some details...

I'm using CentOS w/ InterWorx, so I don't have WHM available. And the import feature is failing on IW - I tar'd the whole site, but it's not being recognized. And it also appears that I'd have to create a new account to do this - I don't see a way that the import feature will work going to an existing account. Since I've already made the target accounts, it's just a little annoying...

There is no (visible) way to get shell access through the browser (it's available on InterWorx, but Jag has apparently disabled that option). Thanks for the FTP info - I'd forgotten that little detail

    Vin - brutish or not, I'm inclined to do it your way... and I'm aware of what 'troglodite' means :lol: Thanks ;}

Your alternative is to put a ticket into support and ask them to do it for you.

I have to admit I am very surprised you say shell access is disabled on your server, unless you are talking about the shared server rather than your VPS, since shell is one of the main reasons for choosing a VPS.

no, no... the web GUI shell access is disabled. I can open up a session with Putty, no problem.

I actually asked support to do the moves for me when I signed up (a pre-sales question), and was told they could do it. However, once I started the VPS and asked, they said they couldn't do it because I chose InterWorx instead of cPanel... caveat emptor, I guess.

that shouldn't be the case.. they moved accounts to my IWorx VPS.
the will state that there are some settings that cant be fully transfers, but it can be done..

it is a bit surprising though, because IWorx has a bulk move tool, that will import accounts and all setting from a cPanel server. i have done it and it works perfectly. (between a Iworx VPS and a Cpanel VPS)

you cant do this yourself, because you need root access to the shared Jag server, but if you supply your root info to tech support they can "technically" use the IWorx tool and move everything to IWorx seamlessly

no love from support on this one... I had to go through the InterWorx guys to get some help. I tried a manual import via the VPS; it failed then didn't clean up after itself. IW's support came in and cleaned it up... the 2nd import went very well, with only a little cleanup needed on some MySQL stuff (Joomla's tables).

I've done two more imports the same way without problem.
