plesk panel : how to pop3 or smtp working

    hello there
ok i am sorry this is a noob question... i never had the need to setup a smtp or pop3 server before but i need to get them working now.

now, a friend of me said that when i create a new domain/account in plesk, database server, web server and email server are all automatically created. email work fine when using the web-based interface they have but when i try to use the pop or smtp servers it doesn t respond and i don t even know where to start in plesk , I mean i checked in every page but there is no link to setup mail server. or is it something i have to go through ssh

    thanks for any help

If web mail works i.e you can send and recieve via webmail, then your mail server is setup..

are you tring to access it via "mail.YOURDOMAIN.com" or "YOURDOMAIN.COM"?

Joe I'm assuming that you are referring to accessing and sending e-mail with a client like OE. I believe the ancient is right:
If web mail works i.e you can send and receive via webmail, then your mail server is setup..
Sometimes in the e-mail client you may need to change the (@) symbol to a (+) symbol.

Not sure if that is your problem, and you may need to provided more information to get a better response.

    hi there
    thanks for the answer.

no i am talking about setting up a smtp server to connect to. i have this user login system where the website send email to users when they sign up. using smthg like smpt.domain.com doesn't work.

it is also used for password recovery and the like.

Unless you specifically set up a smtp.domain.com record in your DNS, it probably won't work. I have no real experience with Plesk besides using it on a couple of client sites in the past, but my experience with most control panels is that mail.domain.com seems to be the norm. If that doesn't work, just try domain.com.

If the login system that you mention is a web application running on the same VPS instance as the mail server than "localhost" should work as your server name. I'd recommend using that.

I would try leaving off the "smtp" I never use Mail, or smtp or anything like that with my accounts, just my domain name.
