newbie sendmail

I think that sendmail is not running on my VPS b/c when i try to use the php mail() function, it always reports the mail server is not responding. In an SSH shell sendmail is highlighted in yellow while nothing else is. What does this mean? I don't have much of a clue about this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am attempting to use the formmailer.php script from dagondesign.com

Please open a support ticket so we can assist you. If you are clueless about sendmail, you probably should opt for a vps with a control panel instead.
