Heya,
I got 2 shared plans with several sites and I've been considering combining them into one VPS or SDX.
How difficult is it to get started with and maintain a VPS?
I got till the 20th, when my 2yr Gigadeal x5 expires, to deside.
This is a discussion on Going from shared to VPS? in the VPS & Dedicated forum

with a VPS you have the stay on top of Security Updates and Patchs for the Software yourself, like PHP Security Patchs, Apache, Mysql etc and request they be installed. With Shared and SDX that is done for you.
The advantage is that you can run anything you want in any config you want say PHP as a Mod instead of CGI for example.
Personally unless you have a need for a Custom Configuration, You need WHM access or want to Lose Cpanel as your control panel, I would go with an SDX
Well...
I was involved with the initial VPS trials here, and at that time VPS was quite comprehensive. I don't know how it stands right now, but there WAS a night n' day difference in the options avaiable to you. I would image you'll be in shock at first, but after studying the situation for a while, it'll start making sense to you.
SDX, on the other hand, is just like what you have now, except there are 1/10th (or whatever) the number of accounts on a server, and you'll have resources up the ying yang, e.g. less ppl sharing the operating system and hardware resources, i.e. the main reason for slowness on shared servers. That's what I'm running right now...
Um...
Do they offer a money-back guarantee on VPS here?
If so, I'd open a VPS account, before your old one expires, and see if it looks like something you would be interested in. If not, cancel that, and go with SDX...![]()

I desided on SDX. I like playing developer & designer.
I'll leave the server stuff to people who know what they're doing.
oh wait, he's talking about us

I'm not ready to concede that point yet...
I've only been here (almost) 4 years!
So, where did 'Smith' go?
'Smith' is a chick, yes?![]()

I've also been 'here' for almost 4 years, altho I started out with Aletia, and they definitivley didn't know what they were doing, or atleast that's the picture I got from their forums. I was lucky then to be on a server that was up more than it was down. Else I might never have gotten here...![]()
Have you had any dealings, of late, with 'Smith', Smo?
Gawd!!!
What's with the clocks here? It's 38 minutes after, right now...

Smo,
My recommendation for you would be the SDX plan, its managed and has a good amount of resources that you can use with it, it is perfect for what I would call a small gap between shared/vps hosting it will provide the power of a vps but in a truly managed solution. You can use as many domain as you need through multihosted domains aswell.
SDX vs VPS comes down to how much control you want of your environment. SDX is a shared hosting account with lots of power available. VPS has root level access with no sharing of system environment i.e. IPs, software, so you can customize it to your needs. VPS may not have as much power as an SDX account as it needs to run a lot of software instances in your share of CPU.
So if you need more power, the recommended path is
Shared -> SDX -> Dedicated
If you need more control, the path is
Anything -> Reseller -> VPS -> Dedicated
That's my take on this.
