    Exclamation Jailshell and chroot enviroments

Hello people! This is my first post so be nice with me

I have a Freedom Plan vps with Fedora Core 2.
I never give out shell to anyone who wants web space or ftp.
But In a case that I should someday need to enable shell to someone
I wanted to see how jailshell works.
I tried to see what is like and I enable the Jailshell from the Web Host Manager. I create a username like this (chrismfz) and I saw that it placed at /home/virtfs/chrismfz/home/chrismfz and not /home/chrismfz
    (logical).
But with a du -m /home/virtfs/chrismfz I saw that this directory ate from me 1.2 Gb ( )
If you think a little more you will find it ok because it just created a whole system in the system (with the compilers, libraries, bins, etc)

    [root@sky virtfs]# du -m chrismfz
    ...
    ...
    ...
    1184 chrismfz
Ok till here. But first: Why if I add a second jailed account will "sit" in another directory (/home/virtfs/other_user) with again from begin all system lib bin etc copied? (conclusion: another 1gb just spent)
and it will not use the same as chrismfz. Anyway, with this I learned not to give shell at anyone (it costs lots of GBs..)

But now, if I delete the user chrismfz or change it position to /home/chrismfz (there is option in whm)
    the /home/virtfs/chrismfz is there again...
Pissed, I tried to delete it to save disk space...
#rm -fr /home/virtfs/chrismfz and Oh my God
I realised that files from the normal system were deleting...
I pressed Control + C and I saved most of data
but not /bin /sbin and some from /lib and I couldnt do anything...
    (system died)
(ps: Thanks Masood for spending 2+ hours restoring the vps. I love you!)

Anyway I made 2 accounts with jailshell. I have two different folders in /home/virtfs with these accounts. I deleted the accounts from whm but the folders are there yet eating me 2.2 gb of space...

    Any suggestions ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Christos Panagiotakis

The files under /home/virtfs are all hard links created by proprietary cpanel chroot environment. You do not need to worry about them. They do not take any real space. The disk usage you saw was from the actual files that they were linked to.

Moving the thread to vps forums.

Sorry to bring up this old thread but Masood is there anyway to disable this hard link so that virtfs directory goes away? Messed me up recently when I did a find command for whole /home directory. I do not need shell activated for any of the accounts as I do all the work via WinSCP.

You should ignore it, the /home/virtfs, as Masood said, is just linking to the real files and does no harm.

If you are using an automated backup system (like the one described in my signature) then you should ALWAYS put /home/virtfs to be excluded from the backup.
