Talking My own ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com?

Hi, I just signed up with a dehe VPS. I noticed that there are already name servers configured, however, I want to change it to other kind of name. I am using Cpanel WHM

    I want something like ns1.mydomain.com ...

    How do I do this?

In the Server Configuration->Basic CPanel/WHM Setup
... the when I try to change the Primary name server and secondary name servers and then I try to assign IPs, it says that

"Sorry, you are out of ips to assign as nameservers"

In the Networking Setup-> Name Server IPs

I tried to delete the name servers so that I can free my IPs but it says that...
"Sorry, the nameserver ip cannot be removing since it is still registered with an ICANN register"

How will I have my ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com? Thanks!

    Hi patch,

It's a known issue that if there are already nameservers assigned it's not possible to remove them. However this is what you can do:

    1. Simply login to the control panel of your registrar, and add the nameservers using the IP addresses of your VPS. For instance ns1.domain.com would use 1.2.3.4 and ns2.domain.com would use 1.2.3.5 (replace 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5 with the IPs of your VPS).

    2. Now login to your VPS (or if your DNS is hosted somewhere else: login to that server) and make sure to add an "A entry" for the ns1 and ns2. If you need any help on this just let us know then we'll describe how to do this.

After doing step 1, it'll take about 24 hours before the nameservers have propagated. After that, cPanel will automatically recognize the nameservers, so you don't have to add them the way you were trying to. In other words: you can basically skip the part where you tried to add the nameservers to cPanel as cPanel will automatically recognize it when you register the nameservers with your registrar.

Well, thanks for your quick answer!

I logged in to my registrar (yahoo) and added the NS1 and NS2 with the ip addresses. Now, where am I going to add the A entry for this? I went to WHM Basic Setup and saw the Add A Entry thing. I clicked it and it says that it cannot determine IP, well maybe i need to wait for another couple of hours. Am I right?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

have you added these nameservers in WHM yet? There's a link on the left menu called 'nameserver IPs'. There, you can add your ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.

Then you can edit DNS zone for yourdomain.com from 'Edit DNS Zone' in the left menu and add these two A entries. You could also manually edit /etc/nameserverips from the command line, as well as /etc/wwwacct.conf and add your nameservers there.

If you continue to experience problems with setting up your nameservers, feel free to open a ticket with the support department.

Milovan: Whenever I try to add these numbers in the WHM.Nameserver IPs, it says "Sorry, you are out of ips to assign as nameservers".

Andre: I did already add the name servers in my registrar x.x.x.x to ns1.domain.com and x.x.x.x+1 to ns2.domain.com. When I type in ns1.domain.com:2086, it goes to my WHM panel. I also tried to ping ns1.domain.com and it also works. But when I view the "Add A entry for this name server" in WHM, it says that it cannot "Cannot determine ip for ns2.domain.com".

What else can you suggest? Am I doing something wrong here?

It's probably best to add the A entry manually. To do so go to "edit dns zones", browse to the domain in question and edit it. For each nameserver you would have to add an entry like:

    ns1 14400 IN A 1.2.3.4

    and

    ns2 14400 IN A 1.2.3.5

Make sure to replace 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5 with the actual IPs.

Login to ssh as root as edit /etc/nameserverips where you would point these two IPs to appropriate nameservers. Then you would see those in WHM without a problem.
