How to do a site transfer from old host

Can someone walk me thru the steps on how to perform a site transfer from an old host (using cpanel 10) to my VPS?

I know its in WHM, under transfers

    is it

"copy an account from another server"
    or
"copy an account from another server with account password"

its the one with account password, right?

because the other one askes for a root password, which I do not have.

I am asking, because I would like to transfer my wife's website over to my VPS as well.. I know I could probably ask the techs to do it for me, but I want to do it myself just to learn how to do it.

so the one I would use is "account from another server with account password"? then type in all that information, IP, domain, userid, password, then do I leave "give new account an ip address" unchecked? or checked?
multiple accounts all share the same assigned IP, correct?

    thanks

If you do not have the root password, you would have to use the "copy an account from another server with account password", indeed.

As for "give new account an ip address": you should only check that option if you want the account to have a dedicated IP address, if you want the account to have a shared IP address you should leave the option unchecked.

After transferring the account you should proceed with updating the DNS. If your old host (or whereever the DNS of the domain in question is hosted) has given you access to modify DNS zones, you should go to to the "edit dns zones" option in WHM (at your old host), then select the domain name you just transferred and edit it. In the zone you would have to replace all instances of the old IP address with the new IP address of the VPS. By doing so, the DNS will keep loading from the old host, however your domain will already resolve to the VPS right from the moment you update the DNS zone.

Lastly, when all domains have been moved over, you should make sure to transfer the nameservers to the new VPS, so that the DNS also starts loading from the VPS (that way you don't have to rely on the old host anymore). To do so, you should make sure the DNS zones of all domains are setup properly on the new VPS (usually when you transfer an account using the cPanel features it'll configure the DNS zones properly). You should then go to your domain registrar and change the IP addresses of your nameservers, so that they load from the new VPS.

If you have any further questions just let us know.
