    File in question.

Hey all, there is a file on the root level of my VPS filesystem called aquota.group which is aprox. 130 megabytes. What is this used for and will it get any larger? If so can it be removed/recreated? I'm a bit picky about space right now as I have the base VPS package.

    Thank you.

Are you sure its 130MB? If you are not using quotas in your vps, you can remove it. But if you depend on quotas for your accounts, you should leave it.

Well, I didn't account for the exact kb to mb conversion, but it still is "aquota.group 131,596.00 kb" as shown in my file manager. I don't use any form of hosting control panel or whatever, so I'm pretty sure I don't need it.

    Um...

131,596.00 KB would be 1.0234 MB, not 130 MB

You can take my word for this, as a fellow webmaster, or I'll be glad to prove you wrong!

    Your choice...

Oh, dear, such a fool I am. Read that too quickly.

Had my place values messed up there for a minute!

    Regardless, thanks much.

    No problem, djg320!

It's a common mistake! That's the only reason I know about it.

Ppl, these days, tend to think in decimals -- just slide that dot over a couple of places -- but that's NOT the way it is. This works for currency, et cetera, but not when you're talking about bits & bytes, and all that sort of stuff...

All this time working with computers and I can't believe the basic rules of space slipped my mind!

    Really? 128,000 K in 1 MB?

Vin the multiplier MB->KB is 1024 not 128K or however you got to that silly number.

That number, 131,596.00, if accurate, translates to about 128.5 MB

...and you can trust me on that.
    Good luck

Oh dear, this threw me into a moment of just staring at that number for a minute to make sense of what's going on. Not used to space read out as kilobytes!

Funny how you can know something for the longest time then at one random moment get confused.
Gotta love the binary system hmm?

Can't believe I confused myself two times over. :-o

But, oh dear! I hope this file is really unneeded.

    OMG!!!

Why do I have to go through this EVERY TIME with you morons?

Okay, let's get rudimentary -- forget about the notations, e.g. initials...

djg320, are you saying it's 131,596.00 Kilobits, or 131,596.00 Kilobytes?

    131,596.00 Kilobits = 0.1279 Megabits or 0.0160 Megabytes

    131,596.00 Kilobytes = 1.0234 Megabits or 0.1279 Megabytes

    Is that clear as mud?

    Kilobytes.

I don't hear of files referred to in bits.....

    Only throughput...

    Vin, you're really far off.

    131,000KB = about 128MB. Period.

    1 byte = 1 byte
    1K bytes = 1024 bytes
    1M bytes = 1,048,576 bytes
    1G bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes

You're hung up on 8 bits in a byte, there isn't such a conversion going on here.
You're totally lost -- have some coffee.

    Please trust me.
    Good luck
