    About hosting an EMU

    Hello

If I would order a VPS or a dedi that i think is good enough...
Would i be able to setup my own private server emulator?

    How?

I heard something like a Desktop view?

    Thanks, Oynky.
    Server: www.oynky.info

PS: The emu only needs a Sql database account.
A few exes, and a few data files.

depending on the type of mmo it is, and what the server sends out/brings in.

if its a standard text send and receive (as it is with many MMO's), you would be fine.

Text is text, its not very big in size. so bandwidth shouldnt be a problem.

the only real concern id have is your database getting to large in size, and itd crash your server or make it unstable.

Now its running on my HOME PC.
    It uses around
400-700MB Ram with 40 ppl online.

    My specs are
    Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
    1Gig RAM
    Win XP

And I am not shure about what u mean with the text to text.

Lets say u can compair it with WoW.

That amount of RAM is too expensive on a VPS server, i believe its the only bottleneck in a VPS plan and the only limit you'll hit pretty much right away on any middle sized website.

For the amount of RAM you need, i'd suggest you go for a dedicated system.

most servers for MMO's dont use alot of ram...because it doesnt compute graphics.

Most servers only accept text..to a database, then sends it back out.

    In short.

Say me, and you are playing the game..

I move...my coordinates upload to the server, the server sends them to you...so on your screen im moving around.

the upload feed is consistent, but in such a small size it doesnt use much bandwidth.

the problem with emu's is that most of them are poorly designed and do not care if Me = 1 side of the world...you = the other side...its still gonna tell me where you are. (assuming i could see you).

true gaming servers (like WOW, DAOC, SWG, etc.) only send coordinates to people of which it effects...

reeeeaally? i'd like to see one of those "lightweight" game servers.

because all of the ones i've seen require a beast of a machine to run properly with more than a few concurrent users. As far as i know, the game server takes control of most of the client "logic" in order to avoid cheating and to properly "share" the game across players, as a result the requirements for memory and CPU go through the roof.

    WorldServer.exe only takes 15-30MB workspace.
Screens in attachment of the emu.

I think its only some packets, the own clients do the rest.

As far as i know, thats not a 3D game server. We are talking something like a 3D FPS or MMORG, like WoW or Neverwinter Nights or similar game.

the only reason why I can see his server requiring as much ram as he says, is if he's running the server on his pc (which he said he is) and playing the game at the same time (which would use up alot of ram).

Nah i am not playing the game same time server is on.
    But like i posted.
My PC aint that good to host a Emu with 40 ppl online.
I do have some background tasks but that shouldnt eat that mutch away.

I talked to some ppl having same emu, diff server. and they sead u need adleast 1 gig ram.

And the Game is 3d. Really high graphics.
Those screens are just from the emulator server host

1gig of ram for a game server is rather little compared to the average game server which can go up to 2 to 4 gigs of ram (for example a NWN server).

and yes, without running the game, just the game server process.

i believe a colocated server is the only way to run a game server, because a dedicated server is too expensive and any other hosting plan is out of the question due to lack of resources (or resource upgrades are too expensive).

there are some specialized hosting companies that do servers for hosting games only, but thats a different story.
