    Dedicated Server

    Hello guys,

    I need your advise.

I've been thinking about getting a dedicated server with JaguarPC. But I have no idea how to maintain a server. How difficult is it for someone that has no experience and knowledge about dedicated servers to maintain a dedicated server? Your advise is greatly appreciated.

Depends, how much risk are you willing to take?

If you don't have any critical websites in there, then it shouldn't matter when you break things. Jag has good support and will fix it for you.

Otherwise a shared hosting package will provide a lot more assurance that you won't break things.

How about security and that sort of stuff. Do I have to take care of this myself?

Jag's servers come pre configured and pretty much run on their own (updates happen automaticaly, etc).

Are you sure about this? Are you saying that I can manage a dedicated server just like I "manage" a shared hosting account?

I would also like someone from Jag to reply on this.

As far as i know and from the VPS systems that i've seen, yes.

The VPS server "as is" comes pre configured with your control panel and all the apps running smoothly, so i guess it all depends on what you are going to fiddle with from that point onwards.

If you are not looking to fiddle as "root" then why go for a VPS? If you want more raw power (cpu/memory) then a Semi-dedicated system could be more suitable for you than a VPS. The affordable VPS plans have too little memory to be usable for anything other than very small sites.

If you are in control of a Dedicated server obviously there are more buttons to click on that you probs shouldn't have. Jag are great in helping you get problems fixed etc. And obviously the forums. I would advised getting the dedicated server and test before hand anything you may want to alter, when live if there is something you are unsure of ask jag!
VPS is an option if you want a cheaper solution with all the same controls etc

I don't want to fiddle with any root, heck, I don't even know what a root is!!! All I want is a control panel and able to do the things I did when I used to be on shared account, simple things like creating database, creating subdomains, creating password protected directories, etc.

I used to be on a SDX, but had to get out of there because my site was using too many CPU. That's why I upgraded to the Apollo VPS. What I really want is to be the only one affected if my site is using too much CPU. This is the case with a dedicated server. I thought that this was also the case with VPS but Jaq informs me that this is not the case with VPS.

Since I don't use VPS, or dedicated this is only a guess. I would think if you had enough skill to manage a VPS you could probably manage a dedicated server.

However, in my understanding VPS is managed, and dedicated is not.

If you really need a dedicated server, I think for an additional monthly fee you can order one that is fully managed.

Ok, so let me see if I get this right.

    I could get a dedicated server for $117 a month? (http://www.jaguarpc.com/services/dedicated.php)

And managed service for $47 a month? (http://www.jaguarpc.com/services/managed.php)

So basically I have a managed dedicated server for $164 a month?

Where are the feedback from JAG personnel? Don't they visit this forum any more?

This isn't an official conduit for sales questions, this is Community Support.

Although JPC folks stop by often, if you want a definitive answer, a timely answer, or to be assured an answer, you need to contact sales directly.

(After you do, it would be nice if you'd post your results! )
    Good luck

Dedicated Servers are unmanaged. You will need to either buy the managed services or pay for support charges ($70/hr) as per your needs.

Level 2 includes 1hr/month free system admin work. If you require more work outside the Managed Services Plan, you may be charged $70/hr.

Having said that, if you ask sales/support at the time of your dedicated server setup to have it configured like JaguarPC machines and setup auto-updates for security patches, your server will continue to function without much intervention.

    Here are some tips:

    1. Do not make server level changes unless you know what you are doing. Check with support to make such changes, e.g. php upgrades, mysql upgrade, cpanel upgrade etc.

    2. Keep your accounts protected by following the security guidelines: http://www.jaguarpc.com/support/kbase/731.html
