    Installing emacs

I have recently subscribed to a VPS and am interested in installing emacs on the server. I am running CentOS and I have attempted to compile emacs from the source files.
When I do the configure script runs successfully, but when I type in make, it fails, to complete the script with a segmentation fault.

Dumping under names emacs and emacs-21.4.1
    make[1]: *** [emcas] Segmentation fault
    make[1]: *** Deleting file 'emacs'

Have googled this fault I have discovered that his is a known problem that can be solved by switching off Exec-shield on Fedora Core. Is there an equivalent fix for CentOS

    Thanks a lot.

why on earth would you want to install emacs? the world has evolved and there are decent applications with something called user friendliness, you should give that a try

back to your problem, why are you installing from source? just do "yum install emacs"

Do I need to install yum, because that was what I originally tried but I get the error message:
    bash: yum: command not found
There is long tenuous silly reason that I want emacs, obviously all very silly!
    Thanks for the help.

That's correct, Marry, you would need to install yum first.
