cPanel Move with Name Servers and DNS

I have no problem with the cPanel move files and restoring them... so that is the easy part of this posting.

    The situation:
    * cpanel hosting at another provider I need to leave
    * another hosting business being run there (by me) with a primary account and 2 name servers
    * name servers assigned via Enom

    The real questions:
    * are there any good settings to change the current DNS record so (IE: TTL) to help the move occur faster
    * I want to assign the 2 existing name servers to 2 unique IP addresses on my VPS. When I tried this once before, cPanel would not let me move the 1st NS record to its own IP, it keps assigning it automatically
    * the NS2 record would not move over, as it claimed it was assigned to the existing server, even though Enom had been updated

I hope this is not too confusing, as I am a bit flustered, but I have also never had to move name servers before.

    Thanks!

Yes, reducing the TTL of the dns zone(s) to say 600 a day or two before the nameserver change would help.
About assigning the new ips on your vps to the nameservers inside your whm, please open a support ticket and we can assist you. There is a so-called feature in whm which checks the whois database for the nameserver ips instead of the local server.

Thanks, I will open a ticket to get around the WHOIS issue I was experiencing.

The default TTL is set to 300 (at least that is what is showing on the DNS entry for the account that WHM created when the account was initiated).

Should these be set to 600 under normal circumstances?

    Thanks

No, 300 seconds is already very low, don't think you would need to change it to speed up dns propagation.

To my knowledge 24 hours is most commonly used under normal circumstances. That's 86400 seconds.

300 seconds is really, really short for the "static" situation. Perhaps someone forgot to adjust it after a previous move? Or do you (or did you) use some form of DNS-based fall-over?

Nope, no fail over, they are basically static unless in a move scenario.

Anyone know what cPanel uses by default vs what should be set in normal circumstances?

    Thanks

cpanel uses 86400 for NS records and 14400 for other dns records by default and is recommended under normal circumstances. 300 is real low, make sure to change it once you have moved over the sites to your vps/dedicated server.
