Server Path

Hi folks.

Just got my first ever VPS running and was just wondering what the server path to the public space is.

On my shared host it was /hermes/web09/b2105/pow.username/htdocs/

Would it be /home/httpdocs/ now?

Running Plesk 8 if it makes a diff.

Another query related to this. I want to ftp a folder into the same level as httpdocs along with anon-ftp & cgi-bin (essentially into /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/) but the ftp client is denied permission.

Any clues on how to get around this?

FTP User doesn't have write permissions from domain.com and below. Solution was to SSH in as root and create folder and chmod it 777.

Hmm.. I think that should be create folder and chown it to said user. If you've got the standard JagPC setup with all the scripts (PHP, Perl, etc.) running as domain.com's user, you do not need world writeable folders and they will in fact give trouble.

The folder is outside the public space and the script that will use it (Gallery2) needs to read write execute access that's why.

Is there a way to configure said folder so that one program and one ftp user can read/write/execute to it?

Perhaps adding them to a group or something similar and giving permission to that group only.

Yes, that's possible. However, I'm a little surprised that it takes so much manual doing. When you setup the account, doesn't Plesk take care of:
- making the /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/ folder and the standard folders under it
- chown-ing them to the domain.com user
- setting up a main ftp account for said user, giving access to /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/ and everything under it
- making sure all scripts (like Gallery2) under said account are run as said domain.com user
?

If not.. well that is the way JagPC's standardized WHM/cPanel setup seems to do it and I suppose you could mimick that.

I setup the domain. ftp user can access /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/ and everything under it. However only has read access to /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/.

Anyway, to move forward. I suppose I can define a group and add ftp user and www-data to it and chgrp the said folder to this group and give the group read write access only. Will this work? Do I also have to add the superuser to the new group or is that not required?

Hi dayo,

That is default setup in plesk, the main ftp account has write access only to certain folders like httpdocs, httpsdocs, cg-bin etc under domain.com. You should be able to create another folder and give it ownership & permissions similar to httpdocs to have the ftp user (only the main ftp account) access it. For all other ftp accounts(web users in plesk language), they can access only their respective folders under httpdocs.

Ah, so you have the user and group already, you just need to set the ownership and permissions with httpdocs as the example .
