    MySql Upgrade

Has Jag thought about going to v5 of Mysql?

It seems that MySql is doing BETA 5.1 and working on 6.0 also.

The reason I ask this was phpBB3 is having some issues with v4 or mySQL and some users had no issues with v5.

    Thanks

Were these issues present even with the more recent 4.x versions? My guess would be that it wants 4.1 (which JagPC has) to function properly, but doesn't care about 5.x specifically.

As for the actual 5.x generation arriving: I wouldn't count on that for a while. Mainly because WHM/cPanel is generally in no hurry to get such things into their stable version.

Actually users have reported that PHPbb3 RC3 has upgrade issues using mySQL 4.x than 5.x

They said that 5.x has not had any major upgrade issues to PHPbb3 RC3.

But you are saying most of the software is dependant on WHM/cPanel and is only upgraded when they do.

    Ron,

I would agree. I'm just getting onto the Forums thing and I chose phpBB becasue it's FREE and easy to use.

I would consider others like vBulletin but I have never used the ADMIN section. And to get a registered version cost $$ which I can not spend at this point.

Oh, don't get me wrong.. I'm using phpBB and am grateful for it, but they just have no idea how to run a project.

I tried to suggest to them that they size their projects to require no more than 6 months. Somehow they took that to mean I wanted them to rush. ????? On the contrary, I wanted them to take manageable bites that could be completed in short order. If they aim for 6 months and it takes a year... well, ok it took a year. But 5?

In this biz, any project longer than a year is obsolete before it is released.

THEN they said that they would not only maintain both code lines going forward but also to add features to 2.x, so that nobody would be required to upgrade from 2.x to 3.x.

When I called BS on that saying they couldn't release a features version in (then) 2 1/2 years but were going to move forward with two lines of code, is pretty much when they banned me.
    Good luck

Ron, before phpBB3, the copyrights were owned by one person. That person was finally kicked out of the project and he passed the copyrights to others.

All the problems we've seen for the past 5 years have been due to that person holding the copyrights and not letting developers work properly on the project (also known as a Cathedral model if you've read books about open source development).

Anyway, he is dead now and the project could finally move on and release things properly. Thats why they released so many RC versions in such a short time.

    Was that psoTFX or another?

(and by "dead" do you mean that figuratively or literally?)

I'm not "up on" my phpBB personnel or trivia or minutia.

Sorry i don't remember the name of the person. No he is not dead literally, he was just forced to give the copyrights away since he wasn't up to the task of improving phpbb.

How could he be forced if he owns it?

I just went over there and read that someone gave up the domain for a majority stake in the previous advertising.... I don't get that.. maybe he owned the domain but not the product.

Oh well. I really don't care. Because of the delay, I took my code in another direction and it would be tough to migrate away and recreate the things I've done. I don't relish the thought of a major upgrade to my site.

I don't know that I could trust them to keep the product current if I did the work to migrate, so I might look at the more consumer friendly and popular BBs out there.

Or move to a whole new paradigm when it happens.
    Good luck
