    Question DNS Configuration

This is my first time setting up a VPS w/JaguarPC (well, actually anywhere), and one bit about the DNS setup isn't quite clear to me.

My domain is registered at GoDaddy, and I've gone there and changed my nameservers to ns1.joshburnett.com and ns2.joshburnett.com, as instructed by the setup email from JagPC. That part I understand fine.

However, when I log into Plesk and check my domain's DNS configuration I see the default settings, with entries for mail.joshburnett.com, ftp.joshburnett.com, etc. While there is an entry for ns.joshburnett.com, there are no entries for ns1 or ns2. Should I set those up myself? That's not mentioned anywhere in the VPS setup documentation. I assume that if I set those up, I should use those same extra two IP's that I've been assigned. Is this correct?

    Thanks for any pointers!

    Hi Josh,

Yes, you need to setup dns records for ns1 and ns2 in your plesk panel and also register those nameservers at GoDaddy first with your 2 extra ips before you can start using those nameservers for your domains.
Tutorial on registering nameservers at GoDaddy can be found here

Yes, I already saw that tutorial, thanks. I've got everything squared away at GoDaddy, so far as I can tell.

Also, I found the helpful directions at How to set My own ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com in Plesk! and followed them to get my ns1 and ns2 set up in Plesk.

However, when I check it out with the report at DNSreport.com (http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsrep...shburnett.com), it fails at the NS stage, telling me "A timeout occurred getting the NS records from your nameservers! None of your nameservers responded fast enough."

I have opened up a support ticket regarding this issue (#12509513).

D'oh! As Veena was so kind to point out, I had a typo in my nameserver IP addresses at GoDaddy. Lesson: triple-check those IP addresses! It's too easy to let the eyes skim over them when you're excited to get your shiny new VPS up and running.

FYI: When attempting to modify your custom nameservers at GoDaddy, you have to temporarily set your nameservers back to GoDaddy's default (parked) nameservers. You can't modify your custom nameservers while you're still using them. Once you've modified them, you can set your nameservers back to your custom ones. This isn't clear, and I had to call their customer service to get the answer. On the positive side, their phone support was excellent, and didn't even put me on hold.
