    Question Nameserver Problems

I'm having a bit of a problem setting up my nameservers on a dedicated server. Of the 3 IPs I have, the second one is already bound to someone else's dot com, so I can't delete the nameserver IP. Just tells me it's registered already with ICANN ... But even tho, I can't seem to register the other IP as a nameserver as whm simply uses the main ip everytime, and using the main server IP doesn't work with the domain registrar anyway.

Setting up the nameservers in the server's DNS zone doesn't seem to work either, as they aren't listed in the nameserver IPs in whm and when I try to register them with the domain registrar, I get an error msg.. Hopefully, I'm making some sense here

I checked the forum, but found the same solutions I've already tried, and still haven't heard anything back from support, so I'm hoping someone here has beat this problem already!

I even went so far as to turn off whois lookup, make a fake first nameserver, add two more (it's the only way whm would find the two free IPs for the nameservers, as the first entry always goes to the main shared IP), and register the nameservers .. didn't work of course, but I was desperate!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    best,

    Jan

If you are referring to WHM >> Networking Setup >> Nameserver IPs option, then please note that it is just a useless feature in WHM. Even then if you want to assign Ips to Nameservers there then I would suggest directly editing the file /etc/nameserverips.

Some registrars check the DNS entry for the Nameservers before registering them so for that you can simply add the DNS A records for both Nameservers in the DNS zone file. Just edit the respective DNS zone file and add the A records as follows:

    ns1 14400 IN A 69.73.xx.xx
    ns2 14400 IN A 69.73.xx.xy

You can edit the DNS zone file from WHM >> DNS Functions >> Edit DNS Zone. Once you add the DNS records for both Nameservers, login to your registrar control panel and register the two Nameservers.

    Thank you for your help!

I just re-did the nameservers in the dns zone for the dedicated server. When I tried to register the nameservers with the domain registrar, and again, I got "errors were detected" ...
Of the two IPs, one is already registered to someone else's VPS as a nameserver, but don't know if thats the culprit or not. Probably me .... but, your suggest didn't work ... I appreciate your help anyway

What are the Nameservers that you are trying to register?

    tried it both ways

I've tried just entering ns1 and ns2 and I've tried it as ns1.jansmart.net and ns2.jansmart.net and I set the dns records accordingly before trying to register them with the domain registrar..
I don't know .. it's entirely possible it's just me, but I didn't have this problem setting up nameservers on either of my VPS's. could be I'm out of my league ....

Please contact your registrar to fix their name server registration process. If that does not help, move to a better registrar that does not perform outdated non-standard tests.

    Thanks for the advice!

I appreciate your comment ... I wasn't aware that godaddy was outdated... I'll tranfer the domain over to namescheap then since both my vps's with you guys have thier domain names there and I didn't have any problem with them ...

Well, so much for that .. the domain is not 60 days old yet, and I'm not gonna pay for an unusable server for another month ...
    Thanks anyways!

Why not contact them first to see if its a bug in their system? If they don't help then you can move away.

    I think I got it ...

I ssh'ed in and manually changed the namserver ips, and it appears to have done the trick ...

thanks much for your time and comments!
