Red face Subdomains On Different IP's

    Hey everyone,
I have 5 additional IP's added to my VPS. I got them added in hopes of using them for my subdomains.

    Let's say that I have domain.com installed, and several subdomains for domain.com; i.e. sub1.domain.com, sub2.domain.com, sub3.domain.com, etc.

I want to be able to change the IP's of these subdomains, but also use each IP more than once.

This is a CPanel managed server. When I go into Edit DNS Zones, there is a DNS Zone for each subdomain. When I go to the DNS Zone of the domain, there aren't A Records for each subdomain.

Does anyone have any ideas how to accomplish this?

Note: When I use CPanel's Change Site IP function, I can change a subdomain's IP, and it works awesome. Unfortunately I can only use each IP once doing that.

You could create separate accounts for each subdomain and then assign the IP to the account or you could just create A records for the subdomain names with your desired IP for the subdomain. Hint: look at the zone for the base domain for the subdomain A records. In order words, if you look a the DNS zone for domain.com you should see A records for sub1, sub2, etc there.

I'm not sure, but once you reassign the IPs, if you do it directly in the DNS zones, you may need to modify your httpd.conf settings for the subdomain as well. I don't know if cPanel binds domain names to specific IPs or not (I suspect it doesn't, but I don't know for sure).

    Thanks for the reply Jason.

I already have separate accounts for each subdomain. I can use CPanel's change site IP, choose the subdomain, and change the IP. That works great. But I can only use each IP once if I do that because these are not shared IP's. I'm told you can only have one shared IP per site. I want to use each IP more than once.

When I go into DNS zones and go to domain.com's DNS zone, I don't see A records for each subdomain.domain.com. Each subdomain has its own DNS zone. I can go into that DNS zone and change the IP but it doesn't seem to do anything. When I tracert I still get the same IP. When I use the change site IP in Cpanel and do a tracert it works perfectly, but I can'rt reuse those IP's.

I've never actually used WHM, so I can't be of much more assistance beyond my knowledge of how Bind works for DNS management (and that's a bit rusty these days too). I I don't know any of the WHM-added restrictions.

I have some experience with Interworx and it appears that you can assign any IP as shared or dedicated and that I can have multiple shared IPs. I figured WHM would be similar though, like I said, I have no experience in that department.

I believe you have to create an A entry for the subdomain. If you already have a CNAME for it then just change it to an A entry and enter the IP address instead of the redirected name.
