Can any of you guys make any recommendations for server monitoring? I'm in the UK and would like a text message anytime my server is down....

I've just got my first customer and want to make sure i don't mess it up before i get any more.

I know you Jag guys are very reliable but i'd like to keep an eye on my server....

i don't know any monitoring services which are free of charge when it comes to SMS messages. Most will give you free emails and a few others will even give you instant messages in MSN/Yahoo/ICQ.

If you are willing to pay, then it won't be a problem getting SMS messages. I've been using host-tracker.com for their free service. I believe another member of the forum is also using them.

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

    Try this:

I get SMS text messages (via email) when services are restarted automatically

I don't see any value on the above script, since cPanel already monitors all those services and sends emails as well.

I was having problems with services not restarting and/or running 'out of control'.

Since I installed that script, my CPU and services have been 'hands off' 99% of the time.

    FWIW

You probably have more serious problems and you need to address them differently, than just "reloading" services. For example, track down why the services are dying in the first place and secondly find out why they are not restarting via cPanel's service.

I have a problem when i want to install it

    i do these steps correctly
    wget http://www.r-fx.org/downloads/sim-current.tar.gz
    tar -xzvf sim-current.tar.gz
but when i press Type: cd sim-2.5-3
the it gives me this error
    command not found

    -----------------
To install SIM first login to ssh as root and execute the following commands and follow the settings we display.

    wget http://www.r-fx.org/downloads/sim-current.tar.gz
    tar -xzvf sim-current.tar.gz
    Type: cd sim-2.5-3
    ./setup -i

    I would imagine that's a typo:

Try just "cd sim-2.5-3" (without quotes) and not "Type: cd sim-2.5-3".

The latest version may not be 2.5.3. Type ls -l at the command prompt. Do you see something like a "sim2-5-4" directory or somesuch?

    Edit:

On the subject of tools, I use mon from my local linux box, as I can test for any number of services, specify test periods, alert methods, etc etc.
