Is it normal for a clean system with cPanel/Fantastico and RVSkin installed to be using 2.32 Gb of space on the VPS?

yes that is normal.. as your control panel and OS also count against your quota

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

cPanel/Fantastico/Rvskin are definitely not 2gigs! If you could the operating system then it seems just about right as dbstephens said above.

But, if you are not counting the operating system then something is wrong, for example i found there are lots of wasted space on garbage files:

    /home/.cpan/*
    /home/installd
(some others under /home related to apache/php rebuilding
/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty (can't remember that path right)
    etc..

i deleted all of those and saved a few gigs. Some of them are needed when cPanel runs the daily update, its ok since it recreates them during the update process.

one example of typical wasted space is /home/.cpan, the update scripts of cPanel have a bug and don't clean them, as a result that path ends up taking several gigs after running for a year or so.

i just recently upgraded from a reseller account to a vps and before all of my data had been migrated it said i was already using 2gigs of space.. but once you factor in cpanel/whm, fantastico, rvskin PLUS an entire slough of operating system files it takes up a large chunk

Can you provide an exact listing of directories for VPSs with cPanel that are OK to clean out? You mention "some others" and "cant remember", so I am more comfortable with a "for sure" list, even if it is incomplete

    Thanks

I know for sure that the extra directories in /home can be safely deleted because when you run /scripts/upcp they are recreated as needed.

The above dir under /usr/local/cpanel is wrong, i believe the correct directory is /usr/local/cpanel/src/ (which also contains a subdir named 3rdparty). Here i'm not sure how much you can delete but the ones i deleted don't have any effect.

I've asked in the cPanel forums for the developers to post a list of unneeded directories but they refuse to answer

For these known "removeable" directories, and cPanel builds coming fast, is it worth writing a script and then setting it by cron to delete them?

Looking for input on this one

How often/frequently do you run it? How often does cPanel run checks where these directories would get used?? As I would hate to delete them when in use.

Once every week via cronjob, i run it 2 hours AFTER cpanel's upcp cronjob has executed.

Of course, once a month is enough, just make sure you run it after upcp and give it some time to make sure upcp has completed. Usually upcp takes a few minutes, so 2 hours is ok but i'm just making sure in case one day upcp decides to recompile something big.
