Another Q! nameservers & IP addressing...

Sorry for the three in a row...

Im a nOOb learning the ropes...

Ive done a bit of reading about, and checked my old hosting account for comparative details, but wanted to query whether the iPs for ns1 & ns2 should be different...??

My current shared account elsewhere, which I am closing.... had the same shared IP for both ns1 and ns2, so I have set mine up with the shared IP I have here, which is also for my default domain.

I was given 2 static IPs and 1 shared... should I have given the 2 statics as the nameserver addresses..?? or have I done the right thing..?? I would imagine I would be better keeping the 2 statics for other domains when needed....

    Any advice would be appreciated...

    Thanks

Then your old hosting company was nuts, and you've made a smart decision moving here!

All domains should be served by a minimum of 2 nameservers (usually ns1 and ns2) - NS1 is the primary nameserver, NS2 is a backup nameserver, ideally hosted on a different physical server in case NS1 fails. The rulez also advise that they should be in different C classes, but that's not going to happen when you get 3 consecutive IPs issued to you.

However, many folks now just put NS1 and NS2 on the same box. BUT, they should be different IPs.

The "standard" way to use your 3 IPs is:

    IP1 for shared hosting
    IP2 for NS1
    IP3 for NS2

I guess there's nothing terribly wrong with also using your 2 NS IPs as dedicated IPs for any domain that needs one but it's "nicer" if your customer wants a dedicated IP for a SSL cert to pay $1 to Jag and get them their own (charge them $2 of course!) .

Jag provides the three IPs so that you can use one as your "server" ip for all of your sites and the other two for nameservers. As EuroNut said, you probably should follow that suggestion.

On my VPS (which I use for my own sites and dev work, not for client hosting) I use one of my nameserver IPs as a dedicated IP for one of my sites (so that I can use an SSL certificate with it) and it works fine.
