    Max users on one site?

I know this is one of those "depends" questions but hypothetically speaking if for example you're running just a out of the box phpbb forum what is the max clients I can expect to service continually with the 128MB plan?

I'm just looking for rough estimate.

    Hrm...

    Interesting question!

I'm *thinking* that MySQL limitations will be the determining factor, but I don't know how that correlates to "128MB plan" epidemiology...

    I'm *guessing* 500-1000...

Max clients in parallel or max requests in parallel?

I'd guess the 128MB plan would have to run without a control panel, dedicated apache and mysql services running just phpbb and nothing else.

Then it should allow you to run up to 100 concurrent users with their HTTP requests running in parallel, which means that your system would easily handle 500 users.

How many above that, i can't really say, it depends on how optimized the configuration will be, like a big SQL query cache.

Are you sure you want a VPS? why not go for a shared account with Jag, which gives 17GB of data and you'll get to use the resources of a big ass system.

    You crystallized my thoughts exactly!

When I was on regular shared hosting, they setup a special cache in my web space, to try and avoid the default limitation[s]...

    Worked great!

I suppose you could do the same thing with VPS...

    Oops!

    Now you're getting cold...

If he doesn't specifically need root access or doesn't need to modify his system in detail then why not go for a normal shared account? that should give him TONS of resources that a VPS wouldn't even dream of having.

Because I want to expand what I can do, VPS is my next step as I see it. There's too many things you can't do with shared. I don't know how it is here at Jag with the shared hosting plans but on my last host the limitations were stupid at least IMO. For example I wanted to provide weather data through a XML feed from NOAA, everything was firewalled to outside connections. Only way to do it was make request for each file that need access and provide details as to what it was.

Then on the other hand I could get any half assed upload script off the net somewhere and use it....

Anyhow thanks for the answer, I'm only getting 10-15 online at most now anyway. Was just curious.

Jag doesn't impose any limits, you'll be very happy with a VPS offering by Jag. Not to mention the helpful community in these forums *ahem*

JPC does firewall their servers, but they are ready and willing to make exceptions for users with legitimate needs. For example, they once opened up outbound connections on port 43 (WHOIS) for me because I was running a script that does whois lookups.

Port 80 is already open to outbound connections, so you should have no problems connecting to web services. I have used the NOAA weather info feeds on a JPC GigaDeal server without any problems.

I doubt a 128mb VPS is your next step up. To run a decent site on that you'll have to make do without a control panel, as well as much of the JagPC management (as that's also tied to having a control panel available to keep their job quick enough). I think you'll find that a rather big plunge to take. Save up for 256mb if VPS is your route.

Well so far so good, I'll upgrade as needed. I've been keeping an eye on the resource meters and they barely budge.
