Anyone found a file: /usr/tmpDSK which is about 500MB in size in their VPS (it shouldn't exist in a dedicated).
I wonder if its something left out when the VPS is created, like an image file...
This is a discussion on /usr/tmpDSK ?! in the VPS & Dedicated forum

I'm using Plesk and no I don't have that file.
Since this forum seems to be hi-jack central :P , while on the subject of temporary files I'm assumming all files in the tmp folder can be deleted?
Any other places I should look for files that can be deleted?
well, you have to be careful because you'll delete PHP session files if you just delete everything in /tmp, which means some people using sessions will be logged out from whatever website they are using.
also, some applications store socket files under /tmp, so be careful what you delete.
OK, hands off then.
thisisit3,
I believe /usr/tmpDSK is the file created by cpanel's securetmp script probably for mounting/creating /tmp as a separate partition. You can get a better idea by reading /scripts/securetmp

hmm indeed!
do you know who or what uses the script "securetmp"? is it something thats executed automatically?
since the /tmp/tmpDSK has a file date back in 2006..
cpanel uses it to secure /tmp and mount it as noexec etc. Yes, it is executed automatically and in some cases after every vps reboot.

the weird thing is, i've never executed the securetmp script myself. For some reason i do have a /usr/tmpDSK file with a size of 500MB !!
even though the file exists, its not used, i checked and this particular system is not using a secure tmp, also its not loaded on boot because the /etc/rc.local has:
#--Added by /scripts/securetmp--
#/scripts/securetmp --auto
the lines are commented out
anyway, i've deleted the file since its of no use to me and its wasting 500megs for no reason.
even if i did run securetmp, i'd modify the script to create a 100mb tmp, which is closer to reality (my current usage is about 5-10mb).
Veena, thanks for the help, much appreciated.
