    VirtFS

Well I have this strange folder in my /home directory called virtfs and it contains, what looks like, a complete extracted backup of one of my accounts... What makes no since is this folder is almost 2GB in size and the account backup it has in it is, in real life, only 250MB in size... I have tried to delete this folder but it fails because it says a tmp directory in that folder is currently busy... What is this folder? What is its purpose? I have never noticed it before until this afternoon when I noticed it when editing a config file for SSH... Has anyone ever seen this folder before?

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.

My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.

Doing a quick Google, I found this: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/...=9080&forum=27

    Here's a follow-up: http://bugs.centos.org/print_bug_page.php?bug_id=2164

This is clearly neither a bug in CentOS (this is no support venue) nor does the problem lie within CentOS.

Talk to your hoster or with cpanel - you're paying for those so *they* should support you.

I just came across that as well.. But it doesn't explain why it is there or what it's purpose is with eating up 2GB of space

Ok so it is a link to other files so it isn't eating up space, Don't ask why it does it, kind of useless!

    Hrm...

I was just reading the docs, and they say the same thing...

    SOURCE

Don't worry about the configuration files, as Virtfs automatically adds or deletes the entries within it as needed.
Doesn't sound like it's deleting to me... just adding!

I wonder if these are symlinks or something...

That is what i am wondering because it wasn't there and then all the sudden I noticed it when I was editing a config file for SSH... I am curious because this morning when I left, I was using 2GB less of space on my VPS and then that folder appeared and now I am using an additional 2GB! I have audited my other accounts and files and there aren't any suspicious files and I get an email anytime the user root logs in with WHM or SSH, and I haven't gotten any of those except for myself, so this is making me wonder...

    Got me...

Sounds like a cPanel/WHM thing to me, and I suppose you'd need root priveleges to do anything about it.

Have you launched a ticket yet?

I have root privs Vin, but no I haven't launched a ticket yet, I've bugged support enough in the past 2 days about my second VPS setup and some other issues i've had... I have them trying to figure out an impossible Internal Server Error right now that they have been working on for almost 2 hours... I messed with it for about 2 hours before submitting a ticket and it just wont go away...

I am about to place a ticket for it though because it is a bit strange

According to that other thread I linked those files aren't supposed to count towards space because they are like symlinks, however, I did a size calculation using WinSCP and the only way to get all of my accounts directories to add up to the total size of the /home directory is to also add in the Virtfs folder... hmmmmmm

    I FIGURED IT OUT! Mwahaha!

The virtfs folder is just a useless symlink to a bunch of different directories... The reason why i am using more space than normal was because my /tmp directory has a bunch of garbage in it from when I ran yum update, downloaded the latest version of BFD, and all of that mumbo jumbo

The VirtFS directory is your jailshell for your ssh connections:
    Jailshell and chroot enviroments

They are hardlinks - you do not want to delete them: http://www.servertune.com/kbase/entry/151/

A warning not to delete these files from the cpanel forum:
    http://forums.cpanel.net/showthread....ligh t=virtfs

You need to be logged in to read the thread. Here is some of the info:
    WARNING - Jailshell and files
We wanted to give everyone using jailshell a heads on something.

DO NOT EVER - try to remove /home/virtfs

You will find yourselves rebuilding your server.

If you delete that directory it does delete the files under it, plus it deletes the real files starting from /

    Example:
    /home/virtfs/user/usr/sbin IS /usr/sbin

    Be warned!

I'm late into the discussion, but i'll confirm that this directory IS A HARDLINK and you should not try to delete it otherwise you'll delete the real files/directories it points to, and yes it doesn't count in size, the original file is counted once only.

The hardlinks are created when someone has used SSH to connect to the system, otherwise you won't find all of your accounts in there.
