I was wondering if it is normal to hit a peak speed of around 250kB/s down from a vps server. I can't seem to get anything faster then that on the standard 100mbit server connection. Any ideas? Should I switch over to the unmetered 1mbit line?

I usually get about 800-1000KB/s from mine.
Downloading from one vps to another, or a dedicated, I get about 9 MB/s often. So, it's not the vps that's the limit, I would say, unless it is having a problem.
I hangs so closely around 250, that I would swear its capped. I guess I'll submit a ticket.
The fastest I have ever seen something download from my VPS to my home computer was 2MB/s and usually I see around 1200KB/s
The 100MB/s port will not actually truly give you that speed simply because it is busy serving other people... I am not sure if the download speed and the upload speed are symmetric or asymmetric either...
For instance, I have Comcast internet and I am provisioned for 8MB/s download speeds... I can easily get 22MB/s+ downloads when I perform speed tests... But my upload speed never goes higher than 3MB/s and is normally around 2500KB/s
If someone with an 8MB/s connection were to download a file from my home dev server, the fastest they would ever download it would be my upload speed.
I am not sure how Jag's uploads and downloads are provisioned, but that to could be a limited factor in your download speeds...
I do see a problem with your claim of 250KB/s but it could be caused by so many different factors.
Are you in the US? What is your rated connection speed? Have you performed a Tracert to your server before?

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce today would cost $100, get a million miles to the gallon, and explode once every few weeks.
My scripts never have bugs. They just develop random features.
I too have noticed my VPS download speed is rather slow as well... Around 300K/second today.
I am a new VPS customer here and last night I tested it and was getting around 600k per second (which is a tick slower than I would like, but livable)... I have the 8MB comcast connection as well.
Maybe this has something to do with the alert about a ddos attack on an upstream provider...
Not sure... but will wait a bit before I submit a ticket.
My tracert did have a hiccup locally, but the highest reading was near atlanta at 76ms.
ping is a bit high now as well at around 102ms average.... last night it was 52ms from texas to the atlanta datacenter.
I do have to say, I transferred 4 accounts yesterday from another VPS, all in all about 5 gigs, in less than an hour's time from start to finish... and they were propogated and emails functional almost immediately after pointing my domains...
Good stuff here at Jag so far!!!
It took my last provider 5 days just to get cent OS with suexec installed and emails from outlook to work! So I'm really happy at this point with my new VPS. It's like the lights were on and AC was running when I walked in the door over here! Thanks Jag!
I just tried downloading a 100MB test bin file from my VPS and was running at around 1800KB/s... I have never seen the speeds you are complaining about... I would definitely check out some tracerts and submit your evidence to Jag

I found out I have the lesser 6 MB connection from Comcast, but download speeds this morning are in the 960KB/s range... which is a fairly good number for me and the distance I'm at from the datacenter.
are you on a "unlimited" bandwidth account? those are speed capped
My Comcast high speed is not capped, or so they say... Since the Comcast Speedboost technology that is supposed to give you a HUGE burst during downloads is not available in my area, they told me it would not be capped... otherwise it would be capped at an astronomical amount that I would never hit anyway...

Just an update to my download speed, this was a comcast routing issue and seems to be resolved now.
